SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara University is honored to announce that the Women’s Club Rugby Team has qualified for the USA Rugby Women’s College Sevens National Championships held the 16th and 17th of December. They will be heading to College Station, Texas to represent the University on the campus of Texas A&M along with 10 other women’s teams from around the country.
The journey that has led them to the National Championships started last year, when the team finished their fifteen’s a side season ranked 15th in the country. The team then separated for the summer, but everyone stayed very dedicated to the upcoming seven’s season that would begin in the fall. Mid-way through fall quarter, the campus of Santa Clara hosted a four-team tournament with the top talents in California. The “BRUWS”, Bronco Rugby Union Women’s Side, took second place in that tournament finishing behind the Cal Bears of Berkeley. That second place finish was good enough to get them invited to the National Stage to compete with the best teams women’s rugby has to offer.
The girls will leave for Texas tomorrow and begin preparing for their first pool play game against Cal Saturday, December 16, at 12:20 central time. Their second pool play game is scheduled for 3:20 against the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Both games can be viewed through a webcast on usarugby.org.
The team is very excited and honored to be invited to the national tournament and compete at the highest level possible. They are looking forward to representing the University on a national level, and demonstrating what Santa Clara athletics is all about.
