On Feb. 9, 2013 Santa Clara University's softball team
officially played their first true 'home game' on the Mission
campus, when the Broncos hosted a doubleheader with the University
of the Pacific at the newly constructed SCU Softball
Since 1979, the softball team had called various fields and locations “home.” A local park and a junior college seven miles away had been the most recent versions of Santa Clara softball’s home diamond. Practices have been held on campus with the team, fans and others having to go off-campus to watch competitions.
In July of 2011 the Santa Clara softball program received great news. The athletic department was given the green light to start fundraising for an on-campus softball facility, one the student-athletes deserve and that matches the quality facilities Santa Clara’s other varsity programs enjoy.
“We are proud to begin the process of building an on-campus home for the Santa Clara softball team. This facility will provide a boost to the program, increased opportunities to exhibit school spirit and allow more students and other community members to support the Broncos,” said Bronco Athletic Director Dan Coonan.
Supporters and fans of athletics understand facilities play
a large role in recruiting high-caliber student-athletes. In
order to compete with conference rivals, Santa Clara needs a
facility benifiting a champion. A new softball facility will
provide a centerpiece for the program on which to build
recruiting and fan bases.
Fundraising efforts continue as the department and University has now completed the first phase of its planned three-phase project to complete the construction process.
