SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Three more former Santa Clara University baseball players have signed professional contracts this month following their 2026 senior seasons, with right-handed pitchers
Hunter Hargett and
Josh Johnson, and catcher
Johnny Luetzow all signing with teams in the MLB Partner Pioneer League.
Â
Hargett signed with the Idaho Falls Chukars, Johnson signed with the Missoula Paddleheads, and Luetzow is playing for the Glacier Range Riders. The trio joins fellow graduated senior
Thomas Ferroggiaro, who signed with the Ottawa Titans of the Frontier League – also an MLB Partner League – in May.
Â
Hargett has already appeared in four games for the Chukars, striking out five in five innings pitched. He recorded his first save as a professional on Thursday, striking out two and not allowing an earned run in 1 1/3 innings versus the Boise Hawks The journeyman righty led Santa Clara's bullpen in 2026 with five saves. He struck out 24 in 18 2/3 innings pitched and was tied for fifth on the team with 16 appearances. He was especially dominant early, carrying a 1.93 ERA and 19 strikeouts in 14 innings (12 appearances) through April 6. That included scoreless outings against Power-4 programs California (twice), Oklahoma, Pittsburgh, and Clemson. Hargett came to Santa Clara after stints at San Diego State (2022), Yavapai College (2023) and two years at Incarnate Word (2024, '25).
Â
Johnson has made two appearances so far for the Paddleheads, posting a 3.38 ERA with three strikeouts across 2 2/3 innings pitched. He ranked second among Santa Clara relievers in 2026 with 20 appearances and struck out 36 batters in 28 2/3 innings. Johnson recorded multiple strikeouts in 11 appearances and didn't allow an earned run in 13 games, including a streak of nine consecutive games to start the year. He opened the season with a 0.55 ERA through his first 12 outings and finished with a 2-1 record, 3.45 ERA and one save.
Â
Luetzow made his professional debut for the Range Riders on Sunday against Johnson's Paddleheads, a 21-2 blowout win for Glacier (Johnson did not pitch in the game). Luetzow went 2 for 3 and was plunked twice to reach base four times in five plate appearances. He scored three runs in the Range Riders' offensive explosion, including twice in the first two innings as the team ran out to a 14-1 lead.
Â
Luetzow had a decorated final season in 2026 to end his four-year career, being named all-West Coast Conference honorable mention as well as being placed on both the WCC All-Academic first team and the CSC Academic All-District team. He was Santa Clara's everyday catcher, slashing .333/.420/.500 across 39 games with 44 hits, 25 RBIs, 10 doubles and four home runs. Luetzow reached base safely in 16 consecutive games from March 24 through April 19 and put together a seven-game hitting streak from April 2-12, going 11 for 23 (.478) against San Diego, Clemson and Saint Mary's. He logged 11 multi-hit games, including six three-hit performances.
