Broncos Close Out 2008 Track Season

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - It was a bittersweet end for the outdoor track team, which competed in their final two meets of the season on Saturday. The team was once again split into two teams for the weekend, with the long distance runners competing at the Oxy Invitational at Occidental College and the rest of the team competing at the Aggie Twilight at UC Davis.
At UC Davis, Santa Clara gave put forth their best effort to some mixed results. For the women, junior Whitney Porter placed sixth in her first 5k of the year with a time of 18:21.7. Sophomore Joanna Gistand raced to 13th and 15th place finishes in the 100 M (13.75) and 200 M (28.78). Junior Anna Wheatley ran to two personal records in the 800 M and the 400 M hurdles. Wheatley ran a season PR in the 800 M with a time of 2:19.9 and a PR in the 400 M hurdles with a time of 1:06.38.
Freshman Robert Reid capped off his debut season with a fifth place finish in the 800 M (1:56.61). Fellow freshman George Sanchez placed 17th (11.80) and 13th (24.00) in the 100 M and 200 M. Sophomores John Laughlin and Garrett Smith, junior Ben Snyder, and freshman Matt Spear all competed in the 1500 M and all placed in the top 20. Smith (4:15.87) and Laughlin (4:17.68) placed 10th and 11th, while Snyder (4:21.40) and Spear (4:26.62) placed 14th and 16th.
While the short distance runners competed at Davis, the long distance event Broncos were down at Occidental competing in the Oxy Invitational. Although senior Michael Delaurenti wanted to improve his steeplechase time for the NCAA regionals, he was unsuccessful at Oxy with a final time of 9:24.62 and a ninth place finish.
Also at Oxy, freshman Christopher Mosier ran to a 28th place finish in the 5000 M with a final time of 16:01.39. On the women's side, all three Bronco women finished under eighteen minutes in the 5000 M. Juniors Veronica Vazquez and Noelle Lopez took 8th(1:40.72) and 16th(17.57.3, a PR for Lopez) and sophomore Stephanie Wilson finished in 12th place with a time of 17:50.82.
While it may be the end of the season for the rest of the track team, the season will continue for Delaurenti, who became the first runner in Santa Clara history to qualify for the NCAA Regionals at the Brutus Invitational on April 25th for the men's steeplechase. He will race on May 31st at Cal State Northridge.
