Reynolds Preps for Sophomore Season

A sophomore majoring in biomedical engineering, Mary Reynolds (Mountain View, Calif.) finished eighth in the WCC last season. This year Reynolds has caught the eyes of the coaches around the West Coast Conference, as she was named to the WCC Preseason All-Conference Team. Recently SantaClaraBroncos.com(SCU) had a chance to catch up with Mary Reynolds(MR).

SCU: What was your best memory from freshman year?

Mary: I have two. The first was a run Stephanie Wilson (All-American), Nicole Giove, and I did in Los Gatos. I'm not sure of the name of the trail, but it was the middle of winter training, so the weather was pretty wet, and there were these waterfalls coming down along the cliffs on either side of us. The trail itself was pretty steep, and water was rushing down that too, making it seem like we were running up this river. It was just an incredible run – we were soaking, but the scenery was incredible and we were having so much fun. My other favorite memory is of the conference meet.  Mainly because of all the people that came out to support us – parents, alumni, and other members of the Santa Clara athletic department. It was such a foggy day, and the fans could hardly see the race, but they cheered anyway. Also, some of the girls and guys on the team who weren't racing that day had made a bunch of posters and were dressed up in costumes. That was really fun.

SCU: What did you find the biggest difference between high school and college races?

Mary: You race less often in college so the races mean more. Also when you come in as a freshman and get to race, you are racing not only against other freshman but other college sophomores, juniors and seniors – girls who have been putting in a lot of training and are FAST. It's a whole new set of faces, great competition, and that makes it really, really, fun.

SCU: Santa Clara has built a reputation for producing hard workers in the classroom and on the field. How are you guys able to manage your time accordingly in order to keep up with both sides of life?

Mary: Coach Service is really good about trying to minimize the amount of class we miss due to travel, and all the teachers I've had have been really supportive of student athletes. Beyond that, it's just a matter of planning ahead and staying on top of stuff and getting help when you need it. That's the good thing about a team – lots of built-in support. Also, it helps that you can pretty much count on always running into a teammate in the library!

SCU: What's the outlook for next season? What are some of the goals for the woman's cross country team?

Mary: I'm super excited for this season. We were a young team last year, so we've got a lot of returners, which means a lot of valuable experience. Plus there are some really strong freshmen coming in. I think our team is really ready this year to go out there, race hard, and throw down some fast times. One of our goals, which I think is really going to impact our season, is to get in a strong summer of training.

SCU: What have been your favorite parts about being a student-athlete at Santa Clara?
Mary: My teammates are my best friends, I'm getting a great education, running Division one college running, and it just feels like fun.
