Running in Malibu Saturday morning at the West Coast Conference Preview, Santa Clara's women finished as the runner-up and the Bronco men were third. The Broncos take a week off from racing next weekend before running up the road at the Stanford Invitational Sept. 28.
"I was very pleased with our results today," said Bronco head coach Felipe Montoro. "Both teams had lots of PR's and more importantly both teams did a pretty good job executing our objectives. Pete and I are looking forward to the next few weeks of training before testing the team's fitness again at Stanford."
Mary Kreige led the Bronco women's team by finishing in fourth place at 21:37.88 with Lauren Germany close on her heels at 21:38.28 in fifth place. Finishing in the top 10 as well was Audrey Hiatt, who finished ninth at 22:00.61. Allie Sibole collected 20th place at 22:38.19 and Kelly Ryan was 25th at 22:47.07.
"Individually, Mary Kreige, Lauren Germany and Audrey Hiatt really stood out for the women," said Montoro. "Both Lauren and Audrey ran about 60 seconds faster than their previous bests."
On the men's side, Santa Clara had all five runners in the top 20. Sam Holeman was the top finisher for the Broncos in 11th place at 25:26.19. Moises Venegas finished in 13th place at 25:33.98. Luca Signore was fast on his heels at 25:34.31, finishing 14th. Joey Berriatua was 16th at 25:41.56, finishing fourth for SCU. Finishing 20th for SCU was Sean Roe at 25:53.52, rounding out the top five.
"Sam Holeman led the team for the first time in his career and also ran a big personal best," added Montoro. "Freshman Joey Berriatua ran very well also. Our upperclassmen were good and turned in solid performances also."
