Giants Select Vizcaino, Jr. in 7th Round; Rays Select Karalus in 8th Round of MLB Draft Tuesday
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Santa Clara baseball had two players selected on Tuesday, the second day of the 2015 MLB Draft. Jose Vizcaino, Jr. became the second-highest Bronco pick since 1997 when the San Francisco Giants selected him in the 7th round (No. 216 overall). Just 22 picks later, the Tampa Bay Rays selected Reece Karalus in the 8th round (No. 238 overall). Tuesday marked the first time in 18 years that the Broncos had a pair of players selected in the first eight rounds of the same draft. The last pair was Paul Chiaffredo (6th round – No. 179 – Toronto Blue Jays) and Mike Frank (7th round – No. 218 – Cincinnati Reds) in 1997.

Bronco Baseball's 2015 Summer Youth Camps Open For Registration
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — RD Academy Summer Youth Camps at Santa Clara University are open to players between the ages of 7-13 years old. The five-day camp offers personal and group instruction in all phases of the game of baseball. Players will receive top level instruction from current Santa Clara University coaches, former college players, and current SCU players.

Bronco Baseball Commit Howard Named AZPreps365 Division II Player of the Year
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Santa Clara Baseball commit Travis Howard has been named to the AZPreps365.com Arizona High School Baseball All-Division II First Team. Howard is one of 13 players and just three pitchers to receive the honor this year.

Baseball's Wilson Named WCC All-Academic Honorable Mention
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Santa Clara baseball's Steven Wilson has been named a 2015 West Coast Conference All-Academic Honorable Mention, announced by the WCC Wednesday. At the conclusion of each athletic season, the WCC selects an all-academic squad for each WCC-sponsored sport. To be considered, a student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average, while also being a significant contributor to his team.

Four Baseball Players Receive All-WCC Honors; Vizcaino, Jr. Named to First Team
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Santa Clara baseball has been recognized with four All-West Coast Conference honors, announced by the WCC Tuesday. Junior shortstop Jose Vizcaino, Jr. has been named First Team All-WCC, junior righthander Reece Karalus and sophomore catcher Stevie Berman received Second Team All-WCC honors, and redshirt freshman righthander Mitchell White was named to the conference’s All Freshman team.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — On the final day of the 2015 regular season and senior day, Santa Clara baseball fell to BYU 4-2 at Schott Stadium Saturday. The Broncos finish their 2015 campaign at 26-28 overall and 12-15 in West Coast Conference play.

Baseball Walks off to Win 8-7, Even Series with BYU
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Santa Clara baseball used a walkoff walk by Jake Brodt in the bottom of the ninth inning to win 8-7 and even its West Coast Conference series with BYU Friday night at Schott Stadium. The Broncos broke a stretch of six straight Cougar runs with the bases-loaded walk, which brought in Jose Vizcaino, Jr. for the game-winning run.

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Santa Clara baseball won its seventh straight game with a 2-1 victory in 11 innings Tuesday night against San Jose State at Municipal Stadium. The Broncos played a season-long 11-inning contest and picked up their fourth extra-inning win of the 2015 campaign in their final nonconference matchup of the year.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Santa Clara baseball produced its biggest ninth inning of the season with five runs to overturn a 5-3 deficit on its way to an 8-6 win over Portland Sunday at Jose Etzel field. The Broncos posted their first West Coast Conference series sweep of the season by winning all three games against the Pilots.

Baseball Continues Conference Homestretch at Portland
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Santa Clara baseball continues West Coast Conference action with a three-game series at Portland this weekend. First pitch times are set for 2 p.m. PDT Friday, 1 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday. On the second to last WCC weekend of the regular season, the Broncos are still in contention for a top four spot in the conference and a second straight appearance in the WCC Baseball Championship.

Budnick’s 10th-Inning Homer Clinches First Sweep of Stanford in 41 Years
STANFORD, Calif. — Ryan Budnick broke a scoreless tie with a leadoff home run in the 10th inning for Santa Clara baseball in a 1-0 victory over Stanford at Sunken Diamond Tuesday night. With the win, the Broncos have swept the season series against the Cardinal for the first time since the 1974 season.

Jose Vizcaino, Jr. Wins Third WCC Rawlings Player of the Week Award for 2015 Season
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Santa Clara baseball's Jose Vizcaino, Jr. has been named West Coast Conference Rawlings Baseball Player of the Week for May 4, announced by the conference Monday. This marks the third player of the week selection for Vizcaino, Jr., this season — he also took home the honors for the first two weeks of the year.

MORAGA, Calif. — Santa Clara baseball rallied from a two-run deficit in the ninth inning to defeat the Saint Mary’s Gaels 8-7 at Louis Guisto Field Friday afternoon. The Broncos scored the first five runs of the ballgame and the Gaels answered with seven runs between the sixth and seventh innings before Santa Clara’s three-run rally in the contest’s final frame.

MORAGA, Calif. — Santa Clara baseball put baserunners aboard in all nine innings Friday afternoon, and scored one run in a 6-1 loss against the Saint Mary’s Gaels at Louis Guisto Field. The Broncos scored their only run of the game on an RBI fielder’s choice by Kyle Cortopassi in the ninth inning.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — In a game that featured 25 hits, Santa Clara baseball jumped out to an early lead before UC Davis scored six runs in the seventh to win 9-7 Tuesday night at Schott Stadium. Each team scored at least one run in each of its first three innings and the six-run Aggie seventh broke a string of three straight scoreless frames.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Santa Clara baseball scored four runs in the first inning on its way to a 6-5 victory over Gonzaga as part of the 10th anniversary celebration of Stephen Schott Stadium Sunday afternoon. The Broncos held off a ninth-inning Gonzaga rally as Mitchell White stranded the potential game-tying run on third and potential go-ahead run on first to earn his second save in as many days.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Reece Karalus struck out a career-high 11 batters as the starting pitcher for Santa Clara baseball Friday night, and the Broncos fell to the Gonzaga Bulldogs 14-1 at Schott Stadium in the West Coast Conference series opener. Santa Clara trailed 2-1 at the end of the seventh inning before Gonzaga scored 12 combined runs in the eighth and ninth innings.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Santa Clara alumnus Stephen Schott '60, the namesake of Stephen Schott Stadium, will throw out the first pitch before Sunday's 1 p.m. PDT contest between Santa Clara baseball and Gonzaga. The event will commemorate the 10-year anniversary of the home of Bronco baseball, which opened on April 30, 2005 in front of a sellout crowd before a matchup between Santa Clara and Gonzaga.

Horned Frogs Complete Game 2 Win, Take Series Finale to Sweep Broncos Sunday
FORT WORTH, Texas — Santa Clara dropped the second of a three game series to start Sunday’s action at Lupton Stadium — a game resumed from Saturday night as the result of a lightning delay — and fell in the series finale 9-2 against No. 6 TCU. The Horned Frogs won all three of the weekend matchups in Fort Worth.

FORT WORTH, Texas — Santa Clara baseball dropped a 1-0 decision to No. 6 TCU at Lupton Stadium Sunday in Game 1 of a doubleheader, and had Game 2 suspended due to lightning with two outs in the top of the ninth inning and a 6-1 Horned Frogs lead. Game 2 will resume Sunday at 12:30 p.m. CDT (10:30 a.m. PDT) Sunday, with the series finale to follow 20 minutes later.

Bronco Athletic Director Dan Coonan is Leaving Santa Clara University
After 11 years serving as Executive Director of Athletics and Recreation, Dan Coonan has announced that he is leaving Santa Clara University to return to his hometown of Los Angeles and become the Executive Director of Development for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Santa Clara baseball faces its fourth nationally ranked opponent of the season when it travels to Fort Worth, Texas to take on the No. 6 TCU Horned Frogs (USA Today Coaches Poll) for a break in West Coast Conference play this weekend. The Broncos are winners of five straight games against nonconference foes, including a 6-5 walkoff victory on an RBI single from Joe Becht against Stanford at Schott Stadium Tuesday night. Santa Clara has defeated all three ranked opponents it has faced this season: No. 1 Vanderbilt Feb. 14, No. 30 San Diego March 22 and No. 26 Nevada March 30.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara baseball walked off on Joe Becht’s RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning to defeat the Stanford Cardinal 6-5 Tuesday night at Schott Stadium. Becht’s hit drove in the first run of the ballgame since the top of the sixth inning, and gave the Broncos their sixth straight midweek victory.

The Broncos are coming off a four-game stretch that featured a shutout win of No. 26 Nevada at Schott Stadium ahead of a three-game sweep at the hands of the San Francisco Dons. The Spartans have lost five matchups in a row and 13 of their last 14 games overall.

The Broncos put at least one runner in scoring position during each of the game’s first four innings, and could not bring in a run against Dons starter Sam Granoff, who threw a complete game shutout.

Broncos Shut Out No. 26 Nevada 3-0
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Santa Clara baseball capped a stretch of nine games in 11 days with a 3-0 shutout victory over No. 26 Nevada Monday night at Schott Stadium. Three Bronco pitchers held the Wolf Pack to four hits and Stevie Berman went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs in the victory.

Baseball Rallies Late, Falls One Run Shy of Pacific 7-6
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Santa Clara baseball trailed 6-0 in the third inning Sunday afternoon and cut the deficit to one run, but could not complete the comeback in a 7-6 loss to Pacific at Schott Stadium. The Broncos scored six times in the last five innings and had the potential game-winning run at the plate in the ninth as Tiger closer Vince Arobio struck out Jake Brodt to end the contest.

T.J. Braff Gears Up for Final Season
Senior first baseman and outfielder T.J. Braff (TB) took some time to speak with Santa Clara Broncos (SCB) about entering his final season on the baseball team. Last season, Braff took over first base in April after an injury to senior Mac Hess, and hit safely in 16 of 20 starts while recording 20 RBIs during that span alongside a spotless 1.000 fielding percentage at first base.

Admission is free for the public. Saturday’s game will mark the second straight season the Broncos have played a fall exhibition, after taking on the Stanford Cardinal last year.

Baseball Announces 2015 Schedule, Faces Defending National Champion Vanderbilt Opening Weekend
On the heels of its first postseason appearance since 1997, Santa Clara Baseball begins the 2015 season by facing defending College World Series champion Vanderbilt on the road. The Broncos and Commodores open up the 2015 season Feb. 13-15 at Hawkins Field in Nashville, Tenn. It marks the first meeting between the programs, which collectively boast more than 250 years of baseball history.

EYEBRONCO: Baseball's Berman, Vizcaino Jr. Talk NECBL Summer Championship
In May 2014, Jose Vizcaino Jr. and Stevie Berman dogpiled with Bronco baseball teammates on the infield dirt of Schott Stadium to celebrate qualifying for the West Coast Conference Baseball Championship. Less than three months later and more than 3,000 miles from the Mission campus, the two were on the field for another championship moment — this time wearing different colors. Vizcaino Jr. dogpiled after he and the Newport Gulls defeated Berman and the Sanford Mainers in the New England Collegiate Baseball League championship series. The two sat down for an EYEBRONCO interview to talk about the summer and the championship series.

Baseball's Vizcaino Jr. and Newport Gulls Win Sixth NECBL Championship
After a spending his summer playing in the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) for the Newport Gulls, Jose Vizcaino Jr. is coming back to Santa Clara with another victory under his belt. Vizcaino Jr. and the Gulls found themselves in the NECBL Championship series where the rising junior faced off against Bronco teammate and summer ball rival Stevie Berman who played for the Sanford Mainers. The Gulls took home the championship, going 2-0 in a best-of-three series.

All Summer Long: Evan Brisentine
Evan Brisentine is happy to be back in a place he's familiar with this summer, though it's not anywhere near home for the San Ramon, Calif. native. For the second summer in a row, Brisentine is playing for the Old Orchard Beach Raging Tide in the Futures Collegiate Baseball League (FCBL). The rising senior looks to improve his game this summer while enjoying the East Coast for one last summer with the Raging Tide.

All Summer Long: Reece Karalus
After a nearly record breaking season pitching for the Broncos, rising junior Reece Karalus has continued his success on the mound this summer playing for the Aldie Senators in Virginia. Karalus, whose 11 saves this past season were the second most in Bronco baseball history, has brought that same skill and effort to Virginia as he was voted to the Valley Baseball League (VBL) All Star game. Karalus has been able to focus on improving his game both from a physical standpoint with the Senators and also on the mental side of the game.

Rising sophomore and Saratoga, Calif. native Stevie Berman had a banner freshman season that earned him a number of accolades and helped the Broncos advance to the WCC Championship tournament. Berman took his game back East this summer, playing in the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) for the Sanford Mainers.

All Summer Long: Kyle Czaplak
After appearing on the diamond 40 times for the Broncos this past season, rising sophomore Kyle Czaplak and his coaches made the tough decision to stay on the Mission campus and spend the summer focusing on his rehabilitation. Due to a bulged disc and injuries to both of his hips, Czaplak has devoted his summer to working with the team's training staff to make sure he's prepared for next season. Though he originally planned to play summer ball in Maine, Kyle has been able to balance training, classes and working with the youth camps at Santa Clara.

Playing for the Haysville Aviators in the Walter Johnson Baseball League, the middle infielder for the Broncos looks forward to a run at the National Baseball Congress (NBC) World Series with his team.

Baseball's Braff, George Featured in Article with Southern Ohio Copperheads
If you look at the roster for the Southern Ohio Copperheads, you’ll notice players from all over the country. Ranging from South Carolina to right down the road in Athens, Ohio, the Copperheads have a wide range of players from all over America. None traveled further than Kevin George and TJ Braff, players for the Santa Clara University Broncos in Northern California. After multiple plane rides and an hour drive, which added up to seven hours of travel, the two Californians made it to Athens without a hitch.

Ohio is new for Steffens, but that has not stopped the rising junior from carrying over his success with the Broncos to his summer ball team.

After a very productive season pitching relief for the Broncos this year, rising sophomore Jason Seever has been staying sharp in the Golden State Collegiate Baseball League this summer playing for the Healdsburg Prune Packers. Along with his fellow Santa Clara teammates Tyler Meditz, Nick Gagliardi and Kyle Cortopassi, Seever has gotten to experience new competition as well as spend some quality time with his host family.

Right-handed pitcher and San Jose native Nick Medeiros has taken his game down south, playing for the Palm Springs Power in the Southern California Collegiate Baseball League (SCCBL). Medeiros is the only Bronco in the SCCBL this summer and is using this opportunity to focus on bettering himself for his junior season.

Jose Vizcaino Jr. has taken his game to the East Coast, playing for the Newport Gulls in Newport, R.I. Vizcaino Jr. had a standout season for the Broncos in 2014 that earned him First Team All-West Coast Conference and College Sports Madness Second Team All-West Coast Conference. This is Vizcaino Jr.’s first time in Rhode Island and so far he is enjoying his time on the East Coast.
