Santa Clara (1-1) hosts cross-town rival San Jose State (1-2) on Sat., Nov. 19 at 7 pm. The Spartans are playing their second straight WCC team after they dropped an 83-81 hotly contested game at San Francisco on Wed., Nov. 16.
Santa Clara has won seven of the last nine meetings vs. the Spartans. Santa Clara and San Jose State have won each other's home court the last five meetings. Prior to that, Santa Clara won five games straight against the Spartans from Dec. 3, 2003 - Dec. 8, 2007.
In the team's last meeting on Dec. 10, 2010, Kevin Foster picked up WCC Player of the Week honors after leading his team to a 67-63 victory at San Jose State. Two days before Christmas on Dec., 23, 2009, San Jose State won 74-68 in the Leavey Center. Santa Clara won at San Jose State, 59-56, on Dec. 3, 2008. The two split the series in 2007-08 with both winning on the other's floor. SCU won 73-63 at SJSU on Dec. 8, 2007 and then SCU lost 62-59 at home on Jan. 7, 2008.
Santa Clara leads the series against SJSU 72-29. Since 1980, Santa Clara has played San Jose State 29 times and Santa Clara has won 19 of those meetings.
Santa Clara finished last season 24-14 and won the CIT post-season with All-WCC First Team guard Kevin Foster collecting MVP honors. Foster was named to the 2011 pre-season All-WCC team this season for the third time in his career. San Jose State, who lost all-league players Adrian Oliver and Justin Graham, is 1-2 this season and was picked seventh in their league.
