SANTA CLARA, Calif. – In preparation for the 2017-18 season, Santa Clara men's basketball opened preseason practice on Saturday, Sept. 30.
Two weeks into the preseason, Santa Clara fans can get a glimpse of the team during Grand Reunion weekend in an open practice.
The Broncos, entering into their second season under head coach Herb Sendek, will work out at 10 a.m. on Saturday in Leavey Center.
Santa Clara returns three starters from last year's team that went 17-16, finishing tied for fourth in the West Coast Conference standings and reaching the league tournament semifinals for the first time in six years.
Junior guards KJ Feagin (14.6 ppg) and Matt Hauser (10.3 ppg) are the top-returning scorers. Feagin was a second-team 2016-17 All-WCC pick despite missing 13 games due to injury. Hauser boasted a 3.18-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio, second in the league and No. 9 in the country. Senior center Emmanuel Ndumanya started the final 24 games and averaged 6.0 rebounds on the season.
Senior forward Jarvis Pugh, who was fifth on the team in scoring (8.6 ppg) and third in rebounding (4.6 pg), along with junior forward Henrik Jadersten and senior guard Kai Healy were also regulars in the rotation last season.
There are five new scholarship players in the program. Matt Turner, Shaquille Walters and Josip Vrankic are all true freshmen who signed in November. Henry Caruso, who played the last four seasons at Princeton, was added as a graduate transfer in the spring. A transfer from Southeast Missouri, guard Tahj Eaddy was added to the roster in June, but will sit the 2017-18 season.
Santa Clara plays eight of its 12 nonconference games at home, including matchups with Nevada (Nov. 15) and Valparaiso (Dec. 18), a pair of perennial postseason teams, along with local rival San Jose State (Dec. 21).
The Broncos face Pepperdine on Dec. 28, in the WCC home opener.
Santa Clara opens the regular season on Friday, Nov. 10, when La Verne visits Leavey Center.
The Broncos will begin practice at 10 a.m. on Saturday with fans able to enter Leavey Center through the main entrance. Season tickets will be available for pick up at the marketing table inside the main entrance until approximately 1 p.m. when the practice is scheduled to conclude.
Season tickets for the 2017-18 season remain on sale, but single-game options are now available. The Broncos will play 17 regular-season home games, including nine West Coast Conference tilts. Purchase options are available online or by contacting the Santa Clara ticket office weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. at (408) 554-4660 or BroncoTickets@scu.edu.
