Bremerton, Wash. – Freshman Gio Gandionco shot a 2-under-par 70 on Tuesday in the second round of the WCC Championship vaulting into a third place tie, two strokes off the lead, heading into the final round Wednesday at the Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Wash.
After firing a 1-over 73 in round one, Gandionco is tied with BYU's Joe Parkinson with a total of 143 after 36 holes, two strokes behind San Diego's Grant Forrest, who shot a tournament-best 5-under 67 Tuesday to sit atop the leaderboard with a total of 141 (-3). 73. "It's nice to see Gio be competitive," said head coach Rob Miller.
First round co-leader Scott Lowe shot a 4-over 76 in the second round to fall five shots off the pace with a two-round total of 146 (+2). He is tied for 13th place with two other players heading into the final round of play.
The Broncos matched their first round team score of 299, giving them three straight rounds with a score under 300 for the first time in the spring season and the second time all season. Santa Clara ended the day in eighth place, 18 shots behind second round leader Saint Mary's and just 12 strokes behind third place BYU.
Junior Bobby Monaco followed his first round 76 with a 2-over 74 on Tuesday to tie for 24th after two rounds with a total of 150 (+6). "Bobby's game has progressed nicely over the season," Miller noted.
Grouped with Loyola Marymount in the final round, the Broncos and Lions will tee off in twosomes eight minutes apart starting at 8:00 a.m. (PDT). Live stats from the final round can be viewed here.
