SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Junior Anthony Chimienti (San Jose, Calif.) scored two second-half goals to lead Santa Clara to a 3-0 win over Saint Mary's in a West Coast Conference men's soccer match tonight at Buck Shaw Stadium.
Santa Clara improved to 8-7-0 on the season and 2-2-0 in the WCC. Saint Mary's falls to 5-12-0, 0-4-0. The three-goal margin of victory was only the fifth time this season Saint Mary's has lost by more than one goal. The win marked the sixth shutout of the season for Santa Clara and the seventh straight win overall in the series against the Gaels.
The first goal of the match for Santa Clara came at the 41:12 mark in the first half on a penalty kick by senior Brett Davis (Ranchos Palos Verdes, Calif.) following a foul by the Gaels in the Broncos penalty box.
At the 66:20 mark Chimienti, who did not start the match, sent a low shot into the middle of the goal after Jamil Walker (Pittsford, N.Y.) and Joe Ascolese (Chattaroy, Wash.) put the ball into scoring position with the assist from the left side of the penalty box. He added a second goal at the 78:21 mark with nearly a carbon-copy shot of the first goal with a one-on-one move against SMC goalkeeper Kellan Wilson.
The two-goal performance was Chimienti's first multi-goal performance of the season and the third of his career. He now has a team-leading five goals and 13 points on the season.
Santa Clara returns to Buck Shaw Stadium on Tuesday, Nov. 7 for a 7:30 p.m. contest against San Francisco. The match will mark the final time USF legendary head coach Stephen Negoesco will coach against the Broncos.
