Broncos Picked Second in Annual WCC Preseason Men's Soccer Poll
July 31, 2001
SAN BRUNO, Calif. - The Santa Clara men's soccer team has been picked to finish second in the 2001 West Coast Conference race according a preseason poll of the league's coaches, the conference office announced today.
The Broncos, voted 13th in a national preseason poll by CollegeSoccerNews.com, received 30 points overall and one first-place vote in a tally of the conference's eight head coaches. Santa Clara returns eight starters from last season's third place squad (10-7, 4-2 WCC). With the return of first team all-conference goalie, senior Rusty Johnson, and 2001 WCC Defender of Year Jeff Stewart, opponents will be hard pressed to get a goal. The Broncos posted a league leading 10 shutouts in 2000.
Last year's WCC men's soccer champion, San Diego, was voted as the favorite to win the WCC men's soccer title in the 2001 WCC preseason poll, while Portland was picked third. Gonzaga, Loyola Marymount, San Francisco and Saint Mary's rounded out the poll.
Santa Clara opens the season August 31 in a 4 p.m. match at San Diego State. The Broncos open their home season on Sept. 4 at 6 p.m. in a crucial non-conference match against Bradley, a team that is ranked among the top 20 in the nation in the preseason and features preseason All-America selection Gavin Glinton.
