Sept. 4, 2001

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara University men's soccer will open up its 2001 home season at 6 p.m. on Tuesday evening at Buck Shaw Stadium against Bradley University. The 12th-ranked Broncos enter the contest with a 1-0 record while the 26th-ranked Braves enter Tuesday evening with a 1-1 mark.

Santa Clara opened up the new season with an overtime win at San Diego State on Friday afternoon. Sophomore Matt Upton scored the game-winner with only 3:12 remaining on the clock in the first overtime lifting the Broncos to a 1-0 victory.

Senior netminder Rusty Johnson notched his first shutout of the year and fourth consecutive dating back to the end of last season. Johnson currently sits in fourth place all-time on the Broncos career shutout list with 21.5.

Bradley spent its Labor Day weekend playing in the Holiday Inn City Centre Classic that was held in Morton, Ill. The Braves split their two contests, dropping the first match against Valparaiso on Friday 4-3, but rebounding with a 1-0 victory over Davidson on Sunday.

Tuesday night's match will be the first-ever meeting between Santa Clara and Bradley. Last season the Braves made it into the NCAA Championship tournament where they lost to the University of Illinois-Springfield by a score of 1-0 in Peoria, Ill. Bradley entered the 2001 season with the No. 17 national ranking by Soccer America, led by All-Americans Gavin Glinton and Hamid Mehreioskouei.
