SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men's soccer team will enter its first match of the season next monday against Notre Dame de Namur ranked 24th in the country by Soccer America.
The ranking was released Tuesday morning by the prestigious magazine, ranking the Broncos just ahead of Kentucky, but just behind Notre Dame. Indiana tops the poll while Virginia, North Carolina, Stanford and Connecticut round out the top five. The only other West Coast Conference team to receive a ranking was San Diego, who came in at No. 20 in the poll.
Despite losing six starters from the 2001 WCC Championship team that advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, the Broncos garnered the honor from Soccer America for the first time since the 2000 season.
Seniors Burke Ewers, Scott McLain and Jamil Walker are charged with leading the youthful Broncos who have 19 underclassman on their 26-man roster. Ryan Cochrane and Steve Cronin, who are currently with the U.S. U-20 team at the Torneo Internacional de La Alcudia in Spain, will return just in time for the season opener to anchor the Bronco defense.
Santa Clara's season opener against NDNU will take place on Monday, September 2nd at 7:30 p.m. in Buck Shaw Stadium.
