SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Junior defender Ryan Purtell was named to College Soccer News' National Team of the Week after leading the third-ranked Broncos to the SCU/adidas Classic title last weekend. It marks the third week in a row a Bronco has been named to the team after Medhi Ballouchy and Jason Pan were also honored by the website. The honor is also the first of Purtell's career.
Purtell won Most Valuable Player honors at the adidas Classic, helping to lead the Broncos to their third straight tournament title in as many weeks. The Phoenix, Ariz. native has started every match on the back line for SCU this season as the Bronco defense has allowed only three goals in six matches. Over the weekend, Santa Clara allowed one goal in 180 minutes.
In Thursday night's victory over cross-town rival San Jose State, Purtell gave the Broncos an early lead with his first goal of the season in the fifth minute. Purtell headed in a corner kick from Ballouchy as SCU took an early 1-0 advantage on the way to the 2-1 win.
Saturday night's match marked the third shutout victory for SCU this season. Purtell and the rest of the Bronco defense held Davidson College to only one shot as SCU posted a 3-0 victory and earned the adidas Classic crown.
Santa Clara, which is 6-0-0 on the season, will travel to Stanford on Friday night to face the also unbeaten Cardinal in the first day of the Stanford/Nike Invitational. Match time is set for 7:30 p.m.
