SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- The Santa Clara University men's soccer team conducts its first two practices Wednesday in preparation for the upcoming season as the 21st-ranked team in the nation, according to the NSCAA/adidas national poll.
The Broncos, which finished last season with a 15-6-0 record and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament for the 15th time in school history, opens the season on Friday, Sept. 2 against ninth-ranked UCLA in a 5 p.m. neutral site contest at Cal State Fullerton. Santa Clara also faces Fullerton, second-ranked Maryland and Georgetown prior to its Sept. 16 home opener against rival Stanford at Buck Shaw Stadium.

Selected by the league coaches to win the West Coast Conference title, Santa Clara returns 19 letterwinners and eight starters from last season. Among that group are nine seniors who form the nucleus of experience: Eric Irvine, Hector Guzman, Kelechi Igwe, Ryan Purtell, Cardiff Schmitz, Jeff Scott, Kevin Sweeney, Alex Tablin-Wolf and Ryan Wolfe.
