SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Every team has a different personality.
Some possess a big-time star player who it relies on when the game is on the line. Others maintain more of a team concept that emphasizes sharing the wealth.
When senior forward Hector Guzman became the fourth different Bronco this season to earn West Coast Conference Men's Soccer Player of the Week honors today, it clearly showed that Santa Clara favors the latter.
A native of San Jose, Costa Rica, Guzman scored twice in Santa Clara's 3-0 shutout against Portland Friday night and the league announced he earned the honor for the second time in his career.
"Hector has really been in good form up front for us, particularly recently," said SCU's fourth-year head coach Cameron Rast. "He is goal dangerous and is very good at holding the ball in our attack. One thing about Hector is that he really links up well with Mehdi Ballouchy. Together those two players form a very lethal combination."
Guzman, who has started the last seven matches for the 10-3 Broncos, has scored four goals this season, two of which have been game-winners. Five of his seven career goals at SCU have decided the outcome in favor of the Broncos and nearly half of his shots this season have been on frame.
After enjoying success on the youth level for Deportivo Saprissa in his home country, Guzman came to the United States as an exchange student and graduated from Harbor High School in Santa Cruz, Calif. in 2001. He played for Spanish side Nervión AD while studying abroad then transferred to Santa Clara in time for the start of the 2004 season.
As a junior, he appeared in 14 matches and earned honorable mention all-WCC honors after the season. Guzman scored three goals, all of which were game-winners and all three came in consecutive games, providing the edge in 1-0 WCC wins for SCU.
Santa Clara returns to the pitch this week for a pair of matches against Bay Area rival San Francisco. Thursday, Santa Clara travels to Negoesco Stadium to face the Dons, then the two teams will meet at Buck Shaw Stadium Saturday night. Both matches are scheduled for 7 p.m. kickoffs.
