Men's Tennis Season Kicks Off Season at Baylor Invitational

Waco, Texas - Originally scheduled for September 23-25, the H.E.B. Baylor Intercollegiate Invitational took place today and three Santa Clara men's tennis players participated in the 10-team tournament.  Blane Shields led the way for his fellow Broncos, reaching the quarterfinals of the main draw of the Gold Division.

In singles play of the Gold Division, Shields defeated Gil Branco of Wichita State 6-4, 6-4 in the Round of 16, although teammate Bobby Rasmussen fell to Adam Becker of UT-San Antonio, 6-3, 7-5. In the quarterfinals, Shields lost to Alberto Agis of UT-Arlington, 6-2, 6-2. In the consolation bracket, Rasmussen beat Niels Buksik of UT-Arlington 6-1, 6-3 in quarterfinal action. In doubles action of the Gold Division, Kevin McQuaid and Bobby Rasmussen dropped an 8-1 decision to Jordan Freitas and Radu Barbu of Texas Christian University.

McQuaid was the lone Bronco representative in the singles draw of the Green Division, falling 6-3, 6-3 to Hubert Chodkiewicz of Texas. In the following consolation round, he was defeated by Mohamed Dakki of Texas A&M, 6-2, 6-2.

Action continues for Santa Clara tomorrow, as Rasmussen will compete in the singles consolation quarterfinals of the Green Flight.
