SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – John Lamble and Ilya Osintsev continued their strong run at the Battle in the Bay Tennis Classic hosted by USF, advancing to the quarterfinals before eventually falling on Saturday. The Broncos also reached the quarterfinals in doubles but were edged out in a tight match.
After receiving a bye and demolishing his second-round opponent 6-0, 6-0, Lamble faced Gregory Bayane from UC Berkeley. The Bronco senior, seeded third in the tournament, turned in another solid performance and won 6-2, 6-3.
Lamble then faced Thorsten Bertsch, the seventh seed out of San Diego State, in the quarterfinals. After Bertsh took the first set 6-3, Lamble rebounded and won the second 6-3, setting up a winner-take-all final set. Despite his efforts, the match would go to Bertsch by a 6-3 final.
In Lamble's first fall tournament, he picked up two wins in the qualifying draw in the ITA Men's All-American Championships. After this weekend's action, his singles record stands at 4-2.
Osintsev, who made his season debut on Friday with two strong wins, went up against Filip Bergevi in his first Saturday contest. The lanky lefty continued his hot start to the season, blowing out his Cal opponent 6-1, 6-0.
In his quarterfinal matchup, Osintsev faced Boise State's Thomas Tenreiro. After a close 6-4 first set, Tenreiro pulled away 6-1 in the second.
Osintsev went 3-1 in his first singles appearances of the 2013-14 season, starting off his junior campaign on a positive note.
In doubles, the fourth-seeded Broncos played Brendan McClain and Garrett Patton of Boise State. The teams were evenly matched and went the distance, with the result being determined in a tiebreaker. The Broncos of Boise State came out on top, 8-7 (2).
