The 2013 Western Water Polo Association Men's Water Polo Championships will begin on Fri. 22 and run through Sun. 24. It is hosted by No. 11 UC Davis. The No. 14 Broncos will play their first game at 2 pm on Friday against the Cal Baptist Lancers. The Broncos are 15-14 overall and 3-2 in conference.
When the Broncos faced the Cal Baptist Lancers earlier in the season at the Rodeo Tournament. The Broncos left the pool with the 10-8 overtime win. Tucker Carlson led the team four goals, including two in overtime. The Cal Baptist Lancers are 15-15 in the season and 0-5 in conference.
Depending on the how the Broncos do against Cal Baptist, they will either play No. 10 UCSD in game four with a win or have a bye until Sunday with a loss, where they would play for fifth place. Previously this season, the Broncos have already been matched-up with No. 1 seed UC Davis, No. 2 seed UC San Diego and No. 4 seed LMU. Losing twice to UC Davis this season and having won and lost against UC San Diego, the Broncos will look to defeat the two toughest teams in the tournament.
On Saturday UC Davis will play the lowest advancing team while UC San Diego will challenge the highest advancing team. The last game of the tournament will be the championship game on Sunday at 2 pm. The winner of the tournament will receive an automatic bid to the 2013 NCAA Men's Water Polo Tournament. The NCAA Water Polo Tournament begins on Thurs., Dec. 7 and is hosted by Stanford University.
The WWPA announced the 2013 award winners going into the tournament. Santa Clara's own Matt Pritchett and Patrick Weiss were named to the WWPA First-Team. Theo Nasser was selected to the WWPA Second-Team. Tucker Carlson and Jimmy Moore were Honorable Mentions for the 2013 All-Conference Team. Freshman Graham McClone was named to the WWPA All-Freshman Team.
