SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Senior forward Annie Garrison registered 16 points and 18 rebounds as she led Santa Clara to a 66-55 victory over Loyola Marymount in conference action tonight at the Leavey Center.
The Broncos improve to 11-3 overall, 2-0 in the WCC, and have now won four straight and eight of their last nine. The Lions fall to 10-5 on the season, 1-1 in league play. Santa Clara is also now 28-6 all time against LMU.
Santa Clara's backcourt was led by senior Kim Sorenson's 15 points while junior Caroline Gruening added 14. Garrison had reached a double-double by halftime, with 10 points and 12 rebounds. She added three blocks defensively to begin the game.
"I was really please with our defensive effort," head coach Chris Denker said. "Our offense wasn't pretty, but our defense became the key. We had huge gutsy efforts from Becki (Ashbaugh), Kim and Caroline. And Annie's numbers were just great."
Santa Clara held a nine-point lead at the half, but went without a field goal for the first six minutes of the second period, as the Lions pulled to within three. A three-pointer by Gruening at 13:44 started an SCU rally that saw another Gruening three, and layups by forwards Jennifer Glysson and Kendra Rhea to give the Broncos a double-digit lead.
The Broncos hit the road this weekend, but they won't be traveling far. Santa Clara will play at Saint Mary's on Thursday, January 18th at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, the Broncos travel to San Francisco for a 7 p.m. game that will be televised locally.
