SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University women's basketball team announced the signing of 6-0 forward Jenni Gottschalk of Littleton, Colo., to a National Letter of Intent, head coach Michelle Bento announced this afternoon, as part of the late signing period.
"We are excited to have Jennifer join our team," Bento said. "We feel fortunate to gain a student-athlete of Jennifer's caliber in the late signing period. She will give us a physical presence along with some versatility in the post position."
Gottschalk, who will be a freshman when she joins the Broncos in the fall, will join five other newcomers to the program for the 2003-04 season. Four freshmen committed to SCU during the early signing period in November, while a junior guard agreed to transfer to the program when the late signing period began in April.
Gottschalk earned second team 5A All-State honors while leading Heritage High School to the Colorado State Championship title game. A four-year varsity athlete, Gottschalk ranked in the top 10 in rebounds, assists, steals and blocked shots, and pulled down a career-high 17 rebounds in that championship contest. She led her team to the final four while earning honorable mention honors as a junior, while leading the team in scoring and rebounding as a sophomore as the team advanced to the Elite 8.
Gottschalk has participated in numerous tournaments and has been named to the All-Tournament Teams at the following: Holiday Hoopla Championships, Junior Achievement Tournament, End of the Oregon Trail and the Nike/Oregon Prep Big 12 Invitational.
Santa Clara finished its season in March with a 20-11 record, and advanced to the postseason for the sixth consecutive year. It closed the 2002-03 season by making its third Women's National Invitation Tournament appearance in the last four seasons.
