SCU Women's Basketball 2010-11 Schedule Announced
SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Santa
Clara University women's basketball 2010-11 schedule was announced
today and it includes 13 home games, non-conference match-ups
against the University of Oregon and University of Colorado, as
well as hosting Fresno State University in the official
season-opener on Friday, November 12.
Under Head Coach
Jennifer Mountain, SCU is set to play a challenging
14-game regular-season West Coast Conference schedule, which leads
up to the league's championship tournament held in Las Vegas, March
4-7. The Broncos' non-conference slate includes games with members
of the Pac-10 Conference, Big 12 Conference, Big West Conference
and the Western Athletic Conference.
“We are extremely excited to get back on the court,”
said Mountain, who guided the Broncos to a pair of WCC tournament
wins a year ago. “Our end of the season tournament run last
year helped spar renewed energy and a competitive spirit amongst
our team. We feel we have a lot to prove and are eager to return to
competition.”
The Broncos open the regular season on Friday, November 12
with a non-conference home game against Fresno State University.
SCU will play its home games at the Leavey Center, 500 El Camino
Real, Santa Clara campus, debuting with an exhibition on Tuesday,
November 9 against Sonoma State University.
“Our preseason schedule will be good for us,” said
Mountain. “We’re going to be tested with many different
styles of play and against teams of high caliber."
The Broncos' WCC opener will be played on the road against Bay
Area rival University of San Francisco Saturday, January 8. It will
be the last game of a four-game road swing for SCU, one of two
extended road trips early in the season.
The bulk of SCU's WCC home schedule will be played in the
month of January and early February. The Broncos will host five
league games during that span. Gonzaga University, a perennial NCAA
Tournament qualifier, visits the Leavey Center in mid
February.
Santa Clara returns three of the league's top players in
senior power forward
Lena
Gipson (one of the nation's top rebounders) and junior guard
Alyssa
Shoji (the reigning WCC leader in 3-pointers made), while
first-year guard
Meagan
Fulps was named to the league's 2009-10 all-freshman team. The
Broncos were one game away from playing for the WCC title last
season, advancing to the 2009 WCC tournament's quarterfinals.
“Our team is very young,” added Mountain. “We
return 10 of our 13 players as underclassmen. I am extremely
impressed with their work ethic and drive and where they want to
go. I am very excited about where our team is at right now. The
future is bright for Santa Clara women's basketball.”
