Chandler, Ariz. – The Santa Clara women's golf team battled the elements Monday in the first round of the University of Wyoming Cowgirl Classic at the Ocotillo Golf Resort, and behind a 5-over-par 77 from Balbina Guajardo ended the round in a tie for 14th place.
Winds blew at 40-50 miles per hour with gusts at times up to 55 MPH. "It was pretty tough," said head coach Krystal Kelly. "It was challenging but we learned a lot today."
Under the difficult playing conditions only 22 of the 103 players were able to finish the round with a score below 80. "I think the course will be more manageable tomorrow," Kelly said.
The windy conditions are expected to calm a bit before round two, which begins Tuesday at 7:30 a.m. (PDT). Live stats from the upcoming rounds can be viewed by clicking here.
Guajardo is tied for 4th place with six other players after round one, six strokes behind leader Hayley Young from Boise State, who carded a 1-under 71, the only sub-par round of the day. Boise State also holds the team lead after a round of 307.
"Balbina played really well," said Kelly. "Meghan (Shain) also played well considering the conditions."
Shain finished the day tied for 33rd after a 9-over 81 and Ashley Noda tied for 72nd with a 14-over 86. Monique Riley shot an 89 (+17) and Taylor Camany came in with a 91 (+19) as the Broncos finished with a team score of 333, tied with Utah Valley and Northern Colorado 26 strokes off the lead.
Despite the turbulent weather, the Broncos are ready for round two. "They are all pumped and ready for tomorrow," Kelly noted about her squad.
