Women’s Golf Returns To Action Saturday In Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate
The Santa Clara women's golf team looks to ride the momentum of early season tournament success when they return to the links Saturday at the 20-team Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate hosted by the University of Wyoming at The Classic Club in Palm Desert, Calif.
Teams and individuals will play 36 holes of golf on Saturday with the event's final round of 18 holes played Sunday on the 6,112 yard, par 72 course. The 20-team field consists of schools from 10 states across the country with seven traveling within California. Division II powerhouse Rollins College from Winter Park, Fla., will also make the trip.
The Broncos opened the season with a sixth place showing at the 13-team Hobble Creek Invitational on Sept. 10 and followed that with their first team title since 2011 at the 10-team Boise State Fall Invitational on Sep. 17. Santa Clara has not competed since a fourth place finish at the 12-team Washington State Cougar Cup on Sep. 24.
Led by a program-best 287 in the middle round of the Boise State Fall Invitational, the Broncos have recorded four sub-300 scores in their nine rounds this season. The team managed to score below 300 just once in 27 rounds last season.
Freshman Annie Freman has placed among the top-10 in each of her three collegiate events and leads the team with a 74.22 stroke average. Junior Kaci McCartan shot a 1-under 215 to win the Boise State Fall Invitational for her first collegiate tournament win and followed with 10th place showing at the Cougar Cup.
Six Broncos have placed in the top-10 this season in three events compared to five top-10 showings all of last season.
