RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Santa Clara women's golf scored the third-best round of the day with a 302 and moved up four spots on the leaderboard to claim sixth place with a three-round total of 921 at the 15-team Battle at the Rock, completed Tuesday on the 6,079-yard, par-72 Oak Quarry Golf Club.
Taking advantage of more favorable conditions, the Broncos moved past UC Riverside, UC Irvine, Cal State Fullerton and Wyoming. However, they couldn't catch Cal Poly, which shot the low round of the day and earned the team title by six shots over Hawai'i with a 903 total.
"We played better today," head coach Krystal Kelly said. "Thankfully the wind died down and the scores were much better."
With a final round 1-over 73, junior Kyleigh Moreno was the Broncos top individual finisher. She placed in a tie for 12th at 10-over 226. Northern Arizona's Sofia Anokhina was the only player to score par and won the event by five shots with a 216 total.
"Kyleigh played great," Kelly stated. "That's an impressive round with the hole locations today"
"Chloe played well today," Kelly said. "She was very steady."
Heading into the final round just six shots off the lead, senior Annie Freman carded a 6-over 78 and fell into a tie for 17th at 12-over 228.
"We know what we need to work on moving forward and we can't wait to get back out there for our next tournament," Kelly said.
That next event is in two weeks when the Broncos are schedule to compete in The Gold Rush at the Old Ranch Golf Club in Seal Beach, Calif.
