ARROYO GRANDE, Calif. – Dense fog along the central coast this morning wiped out one round of the Cal Poly Invitational, but it didn't prevent Santa Clara women's golf from taking the lead when play did get underway. Led by senior Kyleigh Moreno, the Broncos carded a first-round 298 in the shortened event.
Fog forced a delay of nearly three hours and the field will now play 36 holes of golf instead of the originally scheduled 54. "We plan on teeing off at 8:30 a.m. unless the fog returns," head coach Krystal Kelly said.
The Broncos are the defending team champions and have won the event twice in the last three years. They'll enter Sunday's final-round with a six-shot lead over host Cal Poly.
"Overall, I'm happy with the score," Kelly said. "I know that we can play better so it will be fun to get back out there tomorrow."
Moreno matched her career-low round with a 2-under 70 to take a 2-shot lead over Cal Poly's Tiffany Cha. "Kyleigh played the best I've ever seen her play today, I'm very proud of her," Kelly said.
Defending champion senior Kristin Le is three-shots off the pace after carding a 1-over 73.
One-quarter of the players in the field are Broncos and six of them placed in the top-20. Marni Murez is tied for 12th after her 77 with Emily Sumner and Sarah Busey tied for 14th at 78. Busey is one of six Broncos competing as an individual.
Weather permitting, final round play is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. Sunday morning.
