Slaton Named a Preseason All-American by Soccer Buzz
Aug. 13, 2001
NEW YORK - Three-time All-American Danielle Slaton was recently named a preseason All-American by Soccer Buzz Magazine. The senior forward from San Jose is the only member of the 12-player honor roll that will aiming to become a four-time All-American at the conclusion of this season.
The players form a well-feted group as 11 have already earned postseason All-America honors in their careers, with North Carolina's Catherine Reddick the lone newcomer to the nation's top tier after earning Freshman All-America honors in 2000. In all, this group shares 21 All-America awards from Soccer Buzz.
Leading the elite team is three players from defending NCAA Champion North Carolina and two players from Big 10 Champion Penn State. The impressive Penn State duo of striker Christie Welsh and goalkeeper Emily Oleksiuk are seeking their third consecutive First Team All-America honors as they headline the preseason team.
Carolina's trio of defenders Danielle Borgman, Reddick and Jena Kluegel continues the Heels' unprecedented streak of having at least two players on Preseason All-America teams every year since 1997.
California's Laura Schott and Virginia's Lori Lindsey join Borgman, Kluegel, Welsh and Oleksiuk to give the preseason team six of the First Team All-Americas from the 2000 soccer season. Four players (Welsh, Borgman, Florida's Abby Wambach and Slaton) also earned preseason recognition in 2000.
The Preseason National Player of the Year will be announced from among this group in the coming weeks.
