Oct. 16, 2009
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The No. 20 Santa Clara women's soccer team defeated San Francisco 1-0 tonight at Negoesco Stadium, ending a four-game winless streak and earning its first West Coast Conference victory of the season. Senior Kiki Bosio netted the game winner in the 51st minute, while senior goalkeeper Lisa Lahman earned her first career shutout.
The first half ended in a scoreless tie with the Broncos holding a 4-3 advantage in shots. Senior Courtney Lewis had the first shot of the game just 1:11 into the contest. Santa Clara's next shot came at 17:20, when Kendra Perry put one on goal, forcing Dons goalkeeper Kelly Pohle to make the save.
Senior Dani Potts registered two shots in the half also, one of which she put on net and Pohle made her second save of the half. Moments after Potts' shot, San Francisco went on the attack and senior goalkeeper Lisa Lahman made her first save in her first collegiate start.
Just 5:52 into the second half, Bosio notched her third goal of the season after receiving a cross from redshirt senior Jordan Angeli and burying the ball into the far right corner from about 20 yards out.
The Broncos then took the momentum and went on the offensive, firing three more shots at Pohle over the next five minutes, two of which the goalkeeper had to knock away.
Poehle had to make one more save in the match, and the Dons had one more desperation shot near the end of the game, but Santa Clara held on for its ninth victory and sixth shutout of the season.
The Broncos out-shot San Francisco 8-3, but the Dons had three corner kicks to Santa Clara's none. Lahman finished with one save while Poehle had six.
The Broncos resume WCC action this Sunday taking on Saint Mary's at 1 p.m. in Moraga, Calif.
