MORAGA, Calif. - The No. 20 Santa Clara women's soccer picked up its third extra-minutes win of the year with a 2-1 win over Saint Mary's today at Saint Mary's Stadium. Jordan Angeli converted a penalty kick in the 98th minute to give the Broncos their second conference victory of the year.
The Gaels got on the board first when Caroline Shevlin knocked it into the lower right corner from about 18 yards out at 12:38.
The Gaels had only two other shots besides their goal, but neither was on frame, leaving the score at 1-0 at the break.
Seconds after the goal Saint Mary's went on the offensive, but were stoned by senior goalkeeper Lisa Lahman.
At the end of 90 minutes, the game remained tied and the Broncos faced their fourth sudden victory situation of the year.
Lahman needed to make only one more save in the game, just 26 seconds into overtime to help give the Broncos a chance to win. In the 98th minute, the Gaels committed a foul in the penalty area and Angeli stepped up to take the kick, knocking it in for Santa Clara's 10th victory of the year.
The Broncos out-shot Saint Mary's 11-9 in the contest, and Lahman finished with two stops for her second victory of the year. Angeli's good penalty kick was her second of the season and fifth goal of the season.
Santa Clara (10-5-1) returns home next weekend for matches against Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine.
