Ellie Rice Named To National Team of the Week

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Sophomore midfielder Ellie Rice was named to TopDrawerSoccer.com's Women's College Team of the Week Monday for her performance in Santa Clara's season-opening win at San Jose State on Aug. 19.

Rice scored both Bronco goals in the 2-1 victory at Spartan Stadium. She opened the scoring in the 11th minute when she picked up a loose ball near the box and dribbled through multiple Spartan defenders and put the ball in the upper-left corner.

Less than 15 minutes later Rice scored her second goal on an assist from Olivia Klei. Klei hit a long lob into the box that bounced to Rice who took a shot that clipped the goalie but still found the back of the net.

"It's always great to be recognized for your play," said Rice. " I just continue to work hard and have a great coaching staff and a team that believes in me. I try to make my shots count because you only get so many in a game ."

Santa Clara returns to the field this weekend for matches at UC Santa Barbara on Fri. Aug. 26 at 7 p.m. and at Cal Poly on Sun. Aug. 28 at 1 p.m.
