SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara University women's soccer senior Bridgett Miller was named the West Coast Conference Player of the Week on Oct. 24. Miller scored the game-winning goals at Portland on Oct. 21 and at Gonzaga on Oct. 23. Miller has missed several games this season due to nagging injuries.
Miller and the Broncos will return to Buck Shaw on Fri., Oct. 28 for Senior Day against unbeaten Pepperdine at 5 p.m.
"I am absolutely thrilled for Bridgett after overcoming a couple of injuries her senior year and not playing many matches in the first half of the season," said Santa Clara head coach Jerry Smith. "I'm sure this is not how she thought her senior year would turn out but her weekend couldn't have turned out much better. To score the winner at Merlo Field is incredible. To score two game winners on the road is something she will look back on and remember for the rest of her life. I am very happy for her and very proud of her."
"It's really rewarding to be recognized. I did not expect this at all but having gone through my share of mental and physical obstacles, it makes it all worth it," said Miller. "I'm really happy that my team and coaches have supported me throughout everything."
Against Portland, in the 85th minute, Sofia Huerta sent a long pass to the right side of the box that Miller shot to the left side of the net and slipped it past the goalkeeper. The goal made the score 2-1 and was the first of the year for Miller.
At Gonzaga Miller scored her second goal of the season, the ultimate game-winner, in the 23rd minute to extend the lead to 2-0. The goal was the second in as many games for Miller who has begun to see more playing time recently after overcoming injuries early in the season.
The Broncos, ranked No. 10, return to the field for a matchup of top-10 teams when they battle No. 3 Pepperdine at Buck Shaw on Fri., Oct. 28 at 5 p.m. for Senior Day.
