Aggie Stampede Precludes Conference Play for SCU Softball
SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Rain in the Bay Area has limited the Santa Clara University softball team to indoor practices early this week after washing out three of four scheduled games in Sacramento over the weekend.
If weather permits, Santa Clara (4-10) will face some tough competition this week at the Aggie Stampede, a tournament hosted by UC Davis. Local rival California (21-3) is ranked No. 10 nationally in the latest USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 Poll. UC Davis (12-11) is unbeaten at home this year and Oregon State (14-8) has won seven straight.
The tournament in Davis marks the final weekend of non-conference play for Santa Clara, who will open its Pacific Coast Softball Conference (PCSC) schedule at Cal State Bakersfield (6-15) the weekend of April 9-10.
The Broncos started the year 4-6 but have since lost four straight. SCU's offense was terrific earlier this month at the Colorado State Classic, where the team scored 37 runs and had 40 hits in five games. Since, the SCU lineup has generated just seven runs and 15 hits in five games.
Centerfielder Briana Knight (pictured) leads the club in batting average (.400), hits (14), total bases (28) and stolen bases (3). The Broncos are hitting .222 as a team but do have some pop in the lineup. Knight has homered three times and sophomore shortstop Jamie Wallis has hit four.
Rookie contributions have come from starting pitcher Jessica Turner, who has started in nine of SCU's 14 games and has thrown three complete games and first baseman Kelly Scribner and outfielder Stephanie Fisher. Scribner, Fisher and freshman classmate Krista Jensen have combined for 24 hits.
