Close Games Go to St. Mary’s in Softball Wins Over SCU
MORAGA, Calif. – The homestanding St. Mary's College Gaels swept a Saturday afternoon doubleheader over Pacific Coast Softball Conference rival Santa Clara University. Game scores went 5-4 (8 innings) and 9-3; with SCU leading Game One in the seventh inning and Game Two being tied 3-3 in the sixth.
Santa Clara (6-31; 2-13 PCSC) led Game One 3-1 after an RBI-single from Kristin Welsh in the first inning and a pair of Catherine Surane RBI hits in the second and fifth innings. Surane finished Game One 3 for 4 with three RBIs.
Trailing by two runs in Game One's bottom of the sixth inning, Mandy Camuso hit a two-run homer for St. Mary's (13-23; 9-9 PCSC) to tie things up heading into the seventh.
Again it was Surane coming through for the Broncos, knocking in teammate Briana Knight with a base hit to give SCU a 4-3 edge and positioning SCU for the win.
Brittany Sabatini, who had hit a solo homerun in the second inning off SCU starter Jessica Turner, provided a one-out double to tie things back up at 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh. With Jenna Fong called upon in relief to begin the eighth, Tiffany Gonzales hit a walk-off solo homerun off Fong to complete the comeback for SMC.
Game Two was also close, tied at three when Jackie Nicora scored on Stephanie Smith's base hit in the fifth. Santa Clara had 22 hits in the two games (13 in Game One and nine in Game Two).
However St. Mary's responded with a run off freshman reliever Kelly Scribner in the fifth and added five more in the sixth to seal the sweep.
The two teams will close out the 2011 regular season tomorrow, Sunday May 8 with a doubleheader beginning at 12 noon in Moraga.
