Santa Clara, Calif. - Santa Clara women's tennis player Casey Knutson was named the January recipient of the Comcast Community All-Star Award and was honored at Monday night's men's basketball game against visiting San Diego. Santa Clara Director of Athletics Dan Coonan and Jodi Garner of Comcast presented Knutson with the accolade.
The award, which is presented monthly during the academic year by Comcast, was introduced last year to spotlight the positive contributions that SCU student-athletes make in the local community. Bronco rower Justin Ungson was the recipient of the first award of the 2005-06 academic year, handed out in October.
A native of Huntington Beach, Calif., Knutson took time out of her busy schedule once a week during the fall quarter to facilitate a youth tennis program for underprivileged children called Youth Tennis Advantage, or YTA for short. The program was designed not only to spread the game of tennis, but to also help children understand their potential and the numerous opportunities out in the world.
Knutson has been a vital member of the Bronco tennis squad her entire collegiate career. Taking a medical redshirt last season to heal some old injuries, the right-handed junior has established herself as one of the top players on the team in both doubles and singles. Currently, she and her partner Erika Barnes are No. 2 in the line-up and she has been a mainstay at the No. 4 position in singles in 2006.
Santa Clara is 1-3 on the year and returns to action this weekend when it hosts Nevada on Friday afternoon and UC Santa Barbara the following morning. Game times are set for 2 p.m. and 10 a.m., respectively.
