Oct. 1, 2005

Berkeley, Calif. - Members of the Santa Clara women's tennis team were in action today at the Second Annual California Invitational. Freshman Stephanie Galainena led the way for the Broncos, reaching the quarterfinals of the Blue Division, falling in the Round of 8 to 3rd-seeded Tanja Markovic of North Carolina, 6-3, 6-3. It was a great showing by the first-year athlete and head coach Damon Coupe could not be happier the progress she has shown.

"Overall I was happy about our performance at the Cal Invitational and especially [Stephanie] Galainena," said Coupe about his precocious freshman. "She is embracing college tennis and adapting her game to be successful at the next level. She really showed her potential this weekend."

Also taking to the court today were juniors Erika Barnes and Kelly Leathers. Barnes made it to the quarterfinals of the consolation round of the Blue Division, falling to Arizona State's Camelia Todorova in three sets, 7-6, 0-6, 6-1, while Leathers managed to earn a spot in the Final Eight of the consolation round of the Gold Division, dropping a 6-0, 6-1 decision to Sara Anundsen of North Carolina.

In doubles action, Leathers and Galainena lost in the first round of the consolation round of the Blue Flight, falling 8-2 to No. 3 Anna Sydorska and Lindsay McBride of Texas Christian.

"I was very happy with our effort this weekend. Obviously the competition was very tough and it was great to expose the girls to this high level of play so early in the season," said head coach Damon Coupe.
