SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara women's tennis team will commence the 2009 dual season versus local rival UC Santa Cruz on Saturday, January 17, at noon. Coming off a successful fall, behind the rackets of veteran Ashley Pane, and sophomore transfer Kelly Buckley, who won her bracket at the Saint Mary's Invitational, the Broncos look to vie for a conference championship this season.
"We are excited to get back on the courts and start the season," said head coach Ben Cabell. "We had a strong fall that saw several bright spots that we are hoping will translate to success in the dual season."
Santa Clara returns five players including senior captain Stephanie Galainena and All-WCC redshirt senior Myra Davoudi, who came back to play under Cabell for her final season of eligibility. Sophomores Courtney Hull, Pane and All-WCC Carmen Pham all return to the SCU lineup after a year of Division I experience.
"I am looking forward to start the season this week," said Hull. "We have another young team, but our new players have a lot of talent and will bolster our lineup. We all need to step up, especially the returning players who have experienced playing at this level before."
"I am both excited and nervous about playing in my first dual season match," said Wagner. "This team has a lot of potential and we have been working hard to make this the best experience and season."
On deck the Broncos will host Cal Poly on Friday, January 23, at 11 a.m.
