Women's Tennis To Battle USF and NAU This Weekend

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara women's tennis team will face San Francisco and Northern Arizona this weekend. The Broncos travel to USF to battle the Dons on Friday, Feb. 13 in West Coast Conference action. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m. SCU will then host NAU on Saturday, Feb. 14 at the Degheri Tennis Center. First serve is slated for Noon.

Both matches are subject to cancellation or postponement due to the threat of inclement weather for the Bay Area this week. Please check www.SantaClaraBroncos.com for updates.

Last Time Out
The Broncos head into the week with a 1-2 overall record after facing a hard-fought 4-3 loss to Fresno Pacific on Tuesday. Santa Clara earned its three points from singles wins. Stephanie Galainena won her No. 1 spot match against Maria Klokotaky with scores of 6-4, 6-1. Kacie Wagner and sophomore Ashley Pane also picked up two singles wins for the Broncos. Wagner defeated Vanessa Heroux (6-3, 7-5) and Pane triumphed over Elizabeth McFeentens in straight sets (6-4, 6-4). In doubles play, the No. 3 Bronco team of freshmen Wagner and Kimmie Cox won their match, 8-4.

Scouting San Francisco
The Dons enter the Friday the 13th match with a 2-1 record. On Tuesday, USF fell, 4-2, against No. 60 Saint Mary's. The doubles competition was not played due to inclement weather. In singles play Jennifer-Lee Heinser and Mylene Martin recorded the two points for the Dons with wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. Last season, Heinser was named WCC Player and Freshman of the Year after helping USF to a fourth place finish at the WCC Tournament.

Last Match Against USF
The Broncos and Dons last met on Apr. 12, 2008 on the Mission Campus with USF posting a 5-2 victory. San Francisco swept the doubles point and posted wins at the Nos. 1, 2, 4 and 6 spots. Pane earned the win at the No. 5 position, defeating Sarah Oudomvilay (6-2, 6-2) and Lindsay McBride topped Emma Taylor at the No. 3 position (6-2, 6-4).

Scouting Northern Arizona
Northern Arizona is currently 0-2 after suffering losses against Arizona State and Arizona earlier in the season. Last season the Lumberjacks finished 9-1 in the Big Sky Conference and 15-8 overall. Head coach Kim Bruno is entering her fourth year with the Lumberjacks. The Lumberjacks have an equal distribution of experience this season with five seniors and five sophomores on the roster.

Last Match Against NAU
Santa Clara was swept by Northern Arizona, 7-0, on Jan. 23, 2008. Galainena pushed her singles match to three sets, but fell to Orsi Golovics (2-6, 6-1, 6-1). Northern Arizona also swept the doubles matches.
