SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Santa Clara women's tennis team is coming off an impressive season of a 13-11 record and the highest national ranking in program history, No. 51. Senior Maggie McGeorge (MM) hopes to continue the success in her final season as a Bronco. McGeorge received All-WCC honorable mention honors as a freshman and sophomore for her doubles play with Kelly Lamble. She also received All-WCC honorable mention honors last year for her academic excellence.
SantaClaraBroncos.com talked to McGeorge about her injury midway through last season, her doubles partner Kelly Lamble and playing tennis with her family.
SCB: Describe what it was like going through an injury midway through the season.
MM: It was very difficult. I had never had a serious injury before so it was hard for me to accept that I would not be playing tennis for a while. During this period of time, I put all my focus into physical therapy to ensure a strong recovery. I also made sure to support my teammates as much as possible.
SCB: How do you hope to build off it for your final season as a Bronco?
MM: Now that I am healthy I can't wait for season to start. My team is very deep this year with a lot of experience. With four seniors on the team I hope to have the best year yet.
SCB: Do you prefer playing doubles or singles?
MM: Right now I prefer to play doubles. I love playing with my partner Kelly Lamble. We have played together for the past three years and know how each other play. It's also a faster game, which makes it more competitive and fun.
SCB: Your brother played tennis at the University of Iowa. Do you like to play with him often? Did you play together as kids?
MM: My brother played tennis at Iowa and graduated three years ago. Whenever we are both in Tucson we will practice together. I grew up playing with my brother, my sisters and my dad. Tennis has always been something that we all have in common. It was great having them to practice with and really fun too!
SCB: What other interests do you have?
MM: I love to read. I'm reading Steve Jobs biography right now and I am really enjoying it so far.
SCB: Do you still play soccer and volleyball in your free time?
MM: Occasionally but not competitively!
