SANTA CLARA, Calif.— After two losses to Pac-12 opponents on the road in Arizona last weekend, the Santa Clara University women's tennis team returns to the Mission campus and hosts Cal Poly on Sunday, Feb. 24 at 11 a.m. at SCU's Degheri Tennis Center. The Broncos are 2-4 on the young season, while Cal Poly comes in at 2-5.
"Cal Poly is always a tough team," said Bronco head coach Ben Cabell. "In the past our matches with them have always been close. We are excited about being back home and we feel like we have a lot of momentum after the Arizona State match. Even though we didn't win against ASU, who is ranked No. 29, we played very well against a very solid team. Every player knows that if we play just as well as we did against Arizona State, we can do really well against Cal Poly on Sunday."
This season Cal Poly lost to San Jose State, 5-2, and defeated UC Santa Cruz, 7-0, both similar results as Santa Clara posted agains those local teams. Last year, the Broncos, who were ranked No. 66 at the time, lost to the Mustangs 6-1.
The Broncos are coming off of two tough losses this past weekend to No. 33 University of Arizona and No. 29 Arizona State.
"We lost a close one to a great team last weekend and are looking forward to bringing the momentum from that match against Cal Poly," said senior Kelly Lamble. "It's another opportunity to battle against a tough team, and we're going to use being at home as the advantage we need to pull out a win."
Lamble, a four-year veteran for the Broncos, currently owns a 3-2 singles record for the 2013 dual season. Against 29th-ranked Arizona State, Lamble pulled out a clutch victory over the Sun Devil's Leighann Sahagun after dropping the first set. Lamble battled back, winning an important tiebreaker in the second to take it to the third set. The Saratoga, Calif. native closed out the match by a score of 4-6, 7-6 (5), 1-0.
