Athletic's Janice DeMonsi Named Sustainability Champion for SCU Staff; Volleyball's Megan Anders Works As Sustainability Intern
Working to become a champion in Sustainability, including environmental conservation, social justice and fiscal responsibility, Santa Clara’s own Janice DeMonsi was named the Sustainability Champion for SCU Staff. DeMonsi is the Director of Recreation as part of Bronco Athletics.

Brad Keller Resigns to Take Position With UCLA Men’s Volleyball
Brad Keller, who has been with the Santa Clara volleyball program since Feb. 6, 2012, resigned his position with the Broncos on June 9 to take a similar position with the UCLA men’s volleyball team.

Dream Moment for Bronco Student-Athlete Tanya Schmidt Includes NCAA President
Imagine on one of your last days as an NCAA Division I student-athlete, after speaking to a room full of college presidents and administrators, the President of the NCAA applauds your efforts by personally stopping by your table. As he continues to acknowledge all you have done, he tells you he will make sure the NCAA increases the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship award so you can receive matching funds at your dream graduate school, NYU. It’s enough to make you run outside the building and do your happy dance! That’s exactly what happened to Tanya Schmidt last Wednesday night.

SAAC Hands Out 2012 Senior Student-Athlete Awards
The Student Athelete Advisory Committee, known as SAAC, handed out the Santa Clara Senior Student-Athlete Awards last week. Women's Basketball's Alyssa Shoji and men's tennis' Kyle Dandan were named the top student-athletes, while Austin Jones and Tanya Schmidt were recognized for the top individual cumulative grade point average.

Volleyball Continues To Make Huge Strides In Spring Play
Santa Clara’s volleyball team finished a busy spring season on May 12 with the Walk 4 Pancreatic Cancer, where the Broncos helped raise almost $30,000 for cancer research and then closed out play on the court on May 13 with seven straight wins vs. Cal Poly.

Walk 4 Pancreatic Cancer Raises Almost $30,000!
Helping raise almost $30,000 for cancer research (as of May 22), the Santa Clara volleyball team hosted the fourth annual Walk 4 Pancreatic Cancer on the Mission Campus on May 12. The Walk 4 Pancreatic Cancer has raised more than $83,000 since its start in 2009 with all proceeds being donated to the UCSF Foundation.

Lexi Williamson sat on the roof of San Estaban Church in Lima, Peru and gazed out over the entire San Juan de Miraflores District. But instead of feeling at peace, concern crept up on her. All her eyes could observe were the countless homes without electricity and running water.

Bronco Volleyball Student-Athletes Compete in Iron Bronco
Each year during spring quarter, students hit the gym, the pavement, and the pool, more than ever to participate in the annual Iron Bronco. This event is a spinoff of the well-known Iron Man, a triathlon consisting of a 2.4 mi swim, 112 mi bike ride, and 26.2 mi run. Santa Clara students, as well as staff, are able to compete on their own or in groups of 3 over the two weeks. This year, a number of Bronco volleyball players decided to test out the race and compete together. Bronco Volleyball Competes In Sand Volleyball Tournament in Malibu
Another first for Bronco Athletics! The Santa Clara volleyball team travelled down to Malibu last weekend to compete in its first-ever sand volleyball tournament with Pepperdine and UC Santa Barbara. A day Bronco assistant coach Matt Lyles termed as a ”typical spring tournament where there were no winners or losers”, Santa Clara’s team came away with a little sand in its hair and a lot of smiles.

Rising sophomore Katy Schatzman had an immediate impact for the Broncos in her freshman year. The defensive specialist played in 42 sets and collected 70 digs during her first season at SCU. Ali Rambis Ready to Get Back on the Court
Ali Rambis (AR) played in 35 sets this fall and recorded service aces in four different matches, but she was sidelined for a large part of the season with an elbow injury. The rising junior is preparing to make her return in the fall as she trains with the Broncos throughout the spring. Santa Clara Athletic Director Dan Coonan Makes Good On Promise, Joins Volleyball Team in First Spring Practice
While a number of fall sports may have started spring practice around the country on Monday, it’s very unlikely many teams had the special guest Santa Clara volleyball hosted on its first day. Bronco Athletic Director Dan Coonan, in his eighth year at the Santa Clara, kept good on a promise and went through the full practice in the Leavey Center, including wind sprints to start day.

Volleyball Releases 2012 Spring Schedule; Includes a Beach Tournament in Malibu
Revitalized with a re-tooled coaching staff under Bronco head coach Jon Wallace, Santa Clara released its 2012 spring volleyball schedule on Friday. Included on the schedule will be Santa Clara’s first-ever appearance in a Beach Tournament in Malibu and a spring season finale visit with Stanford.

Volleyball's Anders Making Sustainability Contributions Felt
Bronco volleyball’s rising junior Megan Anders discovered a way to combine her love for sports and sustainability when she landed the position of Sustainability Intern, Athletics and Recreation on the Mission Campus. Being involved as a student-athlete always appealed to her, and when the opportunity to apply for an internship position in the Sustainability Office popped up on BroncoLink, she couldn’t pass.

Volleyball's Schmidt Awarded NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship
Santa Clara University senior volleyball player Tanya Schmidt was one of 29 female student-athletes awarded a prestigious one-time, nonrenewable $7,500 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship this week. Schmidt was named twice to the All-WCC team during her Bronco career, including first team in 2010. She was also named three times to the WCC All-Academic Team and twice to the Capital One Academic All-District All-American team. The team captain last fall, Schmidt was also named one of 30 finalists for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award this past fall.

Brad Keller Joins Santa Clara Volleyball As An Assistant Coach
Bronco head volleyball coach Jon Wallace is proud to announce that Brad Keller, a 2002 graduate of Loyola Marymount University, is joining his staff effective immediately. Bringing a resume of helping build national championship teams, Brad Keller spent the last six seasons on the collegiate level; including helping lead Southern California to the 2009 NCAA men’s volleyball title match.

Former National Team Player Matt Lyles Returns As An Assistant Coach with Santa Clara Volleyball
Welcome Back! Playing an important role in the Broncos’ Final Four run in 2005, Matt Lyles has returned to the Mission Campus as an assistant coach with the Bronco volleyball program. He will be involved in all aspects of the program, including the overall training of the team on a daily basis. This will include practice planning and match preparation.

Five Volleyball Players Honored by the WCC, including First Team Member Dana Knudsen
For the 14th straight season the Santa Clara volleyball team has placed at least one player on the West Coast Conference First Team and this year’s entry is junior Dana Knudsen. In addition, senior Schmidt posted the highest GPA of the 12-member All-Academic Team with three others being named Honorable Mention: juniors Kayla Lommori, Alexandra Palmer and Kaleigh Durket.

Volleyball Finishes Season With Loss to Saint Mary's on Senior Day; Schmidt Interviewing for Rhodes Scholarship
Despite Bronco Senior Day for Bridget O’Hara and Tanya Schmidt, Saint Mary’s defeated Santa Clara 3-0 in the Leavey Center on Saturday. Set scores were 26-24, 25-22 and 25-20. Santa Clara ends the 2011 season at 11-16 and 6-10. Saint Mary’s ends its season at 16-12 and 10-6 in the WCC. Schmidt wasn’t at Senior Day because she was in San Francisco interviewing for the Rhodes Scholar.

Tanya Schmidt Interviews for Rhodes Scholarship
Tanya Schmidt will miss Senior Day tomorrow, Sat., Nov. 19, vs. rival Saint Mary’s, not due to an injury or a cold floating around campus but rather, because she will be interviewing for a Rhodes Scholarship to study at the University of Oxford. She will be one of 15 interviewing in San Francisco for two coveted spots. If selected, she will begin at Oxford next fall. Other finalists in her district attend colleges at Harvard, Cornell, MIT, Brown, Georgetown, Stanford and Cal-Berkeley, to name a few.

Schmidt Named to CoSIDA All-District Academic Team; Only WCC Player to Make List Last Two Years
Senior middle blocker Tanya Schmidt, who carries a 3.971 grade point average, was named Friday to the Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team. She is the only West Coast Conference Player on the First Team and the only volleyball player from the WCC to be recognized the past two years on the All-District team. Her name will now be forwarded to the Academic All-American national committee.

Santa Clara fell in four at LMU on Saturday. Set scores of 25-18, 24-26, 25-19, 25-19 in Gersten Pavilion. LMU hit .315 over the course of the match, including .340 or better in three of the four sets. Santa Clara is 9-13 and 4-8 in the WCC. LMU is 14-12 and 7-6 in the WCC. The two spilit the season series with the home winning both times.

Santa Clara plays just one match this week and it’s a big one! The Broncos host BYU on Sat., Oct. 29 at 1 pm for the first time since the Cougars joined the West Coast Conference. Santa Clara is 9-11 and 4-5 in the WCC and BYU is 16-7 and 5-4 in the WCC. Santa Clara enters the week on a two-match winning streak, while BYU dropped two 3-1 matches at home last week to No. 18 Pepperdine and No. 17 San Diego.

More than half way done with the season, the Santa Clara volleyball team has gone through some ups and downs this season. Volleyball's Knudsen Named WCC Player of the Week for Fourth Time in Her Bronco Career
For the fourth time in her Bronco career, Santa Clara junior Dana Knudsen was named the West Coast Conference Player of the Week on Monday after hitting .548 last week in the team’s 3-0 win vs. LMU and its 3-1 win over rival USF. She was chosen over five other WCC nominees and was named to the All-WCC Preseason Coaches Team.

Winning the first set wasn’t enough as Santa Clara fell 3-1 to No. 19 Pepperdine Thursday night in the Leavey Center. Santa Clara is 7-10 and 2-4 in the WCC. Pepperdine is 12-5 and 6-0 in the WCC. Set scores were 23-25, 25-16, 25-16 and 25-7. Pepperdine is the only team in the West Coast Conference to start 6-0.

Katy Schatzman Reveals Why Santa Clara is a Special Place
Freshman Katy Schatzman (KS) joined the Broncos this summer from Presentation High School in San Jose, Calif. Prior to her college career, she was the captain of a Presentation team that was the No. 1 ranked high school team in the country for four weeks during her senior year.

Santa Clara returns home for an important match this weekend as it hosts the 2011 West Coast Conference home opener vs. No. 16 San Diego on Sat., Sept. 23 at 1 pm. The Toreros, the defending WCC champions, came to the Bay Area flying high with unblemished 13-0 record, a first in school history, but were swept by USF on Thursday night 3-0. USD now travels to the Mission Campus for its match with the Broncos. The Broncos will then travel to Portland (Sept. 29), Gonzaga (Oct. 1), BYU (Oct. 6) and USF (Oct. 8) before returning home to host four of the next five matches with Pepperdine starting the streak at 6 pm on Thurs., Oct. 13.

Volleyball Battles From Behind to Defeat UTSA in Five
Down two sets to one with the Roadrunners serving match point twice, Santa Clara battled back down from 14-10 in the fifth set to defeat UT-San Antonio 3-2 early Saturday morning (match began at 7 am Pacific in Austin, Texas). It was Santa Clara’s first five set match this season. Santa Clara holds a 4-1 career records vs. the Roadrunners. The Broncos are 4-6 and UTSA is 6-7.

Playing in front of almost 2,000 Longhorn fans, Santa Clara fell 3-0 to No. 8 Texas in the first match of the Time Warner Cable Texas Invitational. Texas won 25-13, 25-23 and 25-19.Saturday the Broncos will play University of Texas-San Antonio (UTSA) at 7 am (Pacific) before finishing the tournament with a 2:30 pm (Pacific) match vs. SMU later that afternoon.

Santa Clara travels to Austin, Texas this weekend to compete in the Time Warner Cable Texas Invitational Sept. 16-17. Santa Clara will play host Texas, ranked No. 8 nationally this week, at 4:30 pm (Pacific) on Fri., Sept. 16. The Broncos will then play University of Texas-San Antonio (USTA) at 7 am (Pacific) on Sat., Sept. 17 before finishing the tournament with a 2:30 pm (Pacific) match vs. SMU later that afternoon. The Texas match will be shown on Longhorn TV.

Alyssa Anderson Returns to Home State
Sophomore Alyssa Anderson transferred to Santa Clara last spring after an impressive freshman volleyball season at Villanova University. A native of Hermosa Beach, Calif. the 5’10 setter led the Wildcats in assists and was third in digs as the team finished with a 23-7 overall record. Volleyball Falls 3-1 to No. 24 Michigan
In its second match of the La Quinta Inn & Suites Invitational at Utah Valley State, No. 24 Michigan defeated Santa Clara 3-1. Santa Clara is now 4-2 this season and Michigan moves to 5-0. Set scores were 21-25, 25-20, 15-25 and 13-25. Santa Clara will finish the tournament on with a 6 pm match with Utah State Valley later today.

Volleyball Heads to Utah for La Quinta Inn & Suites Invitational at Utah Valley State
With the current WCC Player of Week in Dana Knudsen, The Santa Clara volleyball team enters the second week of its season, continuing play non-conference tournaments. The Broncos (2-1) travel to Utah to play in the La Quinta Inn & Suites Invitational at Utah Valley State. The Broncos open up the tournament against Cal Poly on Fri., Sept. 3 at 4:30 p.m. Santa Clara will continue the tournament on Sat., Sept. 4 with matches vs. Michigan (3-0) and Utah Valley State (2-1). They will play Michigan at 10 am and then host-Utah Valley State at 7 pm. Michigan is No. 24 in the latest AVCA national poll and Cal Poly received votes this week.

Knudsen Collects WCC Player Of the Week For Third Time in Her Career
Hitting .545 this past weekend, Bronco junior Dana Knudsen was named the West Coast Conference Player of the Week in the first week of play. Knudsen, who was selected over seven other WCC players, led Santa Clara to a 2-1 record and was named to the All-Tournament team at the Seattle University Fall Volley. Tanya Schmidt was also named to the All-Tournament team. It is the third straight year Knudsen has received WCC Player of the Week honors early in the season.

Douglas, Knudsen Shine in Win over Eastern Washington
Playing its third match in 24 hours to start the season, Santa Clara defeated Eastern Washington 3-0 Saturday. The Broncos won 25-19, 25-19 and 25-18. Earlier in the day Eastern Washington defeated Washington State in five sets. Santa Clara finishes the tournament at 2-1 and heads to Utah Valley State next weekend for three matches.

Volleyball Led by All-WCC Middles in 3-0 Win Over Seattle
Crushing the ball and hitting .720 in the third set, Santa Clara defeated tournament host Seattle tonight 3-0. The Broncos won 25-15, 28-26 and 25-14. Santa Clara, 1-1, plays Eastern Washington tomorrow at 1 pm to finish out its play in the Emerald City.

On Eve of Bronco Volleyball Kicking Off Season Schmidt Named as Candidate for Lowe's Senior CLASS Award
On the eve of Santa Clara’s first 2011 volleyball match in Seattle, senior Tanya Schmidt was named as a candidate for the 2011 Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award. Schmidt, one of just two from the WCC on the list, is a returning All-WCC First Team Middle Blocker for the Broncos who also excels in the classroom, sporting a 3.97 GPA as she enters her final season - one of the highest GPAs among the candidates. Setting It Up With Alexandra Palmer
With the season opening in a couple days, setter Alexandra Palmer and the rest of the Santa Clara volleyball team has spent their two-week preseason in full force. As an upperclassman Palmer is excited for her expanded role as a leader and has set high standards for herself and her teammates. The junior setter has shaken off past injuries and is ready for the season to begin.

Douglas Returns to the Court
Almost one year after suffering a season-ending injury, Katherine Douglas (KD) is back in her hard-hitting form. During her freshman year, Douglas took on the appearance of a veteran, recording 281 kills and 252 digs in 29 matches. As a red-shirt sophomore, Douglas, who spent part of her summer competing in Beijing, is prepared to suit up as a Bronco and take to the court once again. SCU Places Record Number on 10th annual WCC Commissioner's Honor Roll
With the conclusion of the 2010-11 academic year, the West Coast Conference is proud to announce the 10th annual WCC Commissioner's Honor Roll, which recognizes those student-athletes that possess at least a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale. A record number 122 Bronco student-athletes made the list, besting last year's mark of 118. Santa Clara had 21 on the Gold list, 21 on the Silver list and 80 on the Bronze list. Santa Clara's student-athletes recorded a school-best 3.14 GPA during the Spring 2011 quarter as well.

Bronco Student-Athletes Record School Record 3.14 GPA For Spring 2011 Quarter
Recording the highest grade point average in Santa Clara history, Bronco student-athletes recorded a school record 3.14 gpa for the spring 2011 quarter. The previous high-water mark for the student-athletes one quarter gpa was 3.11 in the winter of 2009. In addition 92 student-athletes achieved a 3.5 GPA this quarter. Santa Clara's student-athletes have achieved a 3.0 GPA or better 13 of the last 14 quarters. Santa Clara's cumulative gpa for its student-athletes is 3.097.

DAY 14!! Two of Santa Clara’s volleyball players, Katherine Douglas (Kat) and Kayla Lommori (Kayla), are currently in China participating in a tournament in Beijing and Tainjin. They are teaming up to blog about their trip and their day-to-day experiences as they encounter a new culture and new opportunities while playing volleyball for the first time in China.
