AKRON, Ohio – Santa Clara men's golf entered the clubhouse in fourth-place at 1-under 575 after 36 holes of the weather-delayed Firestone Invitational.
"It's our first tournament of the season and we were a little rusty," head coach Rob Miller said. "But we got through it and we'll get back out there tomorrow."
McCarty had the team's low score of the day with a second-round 4-under 68, moving him to 2-under for the tournament and into a share of seventh with a 142 total, just four shots behind co-leaders Fabian Sunden of host Akron and Gustav Fransson of Old Dominion.
"Matt had a nice comeback in the second round after struggling with his putting in the first," Miller said.
A 2-under 70 in his first collegiate round put Gutierrez among the top-5 after 18 holes. However, his second-round 73 dropped him into a tie for ninth with a pair of golfers at 1-under 143. "He's a solid player. He's going to contribute," Miller said of his rookie.
Junior Zack Kaneshiro carded a second-round 1-under 71 to enter the clubhouse in a tie for 20th at 1-over 143.
Berk Harvey and Konrad Brauckmeyer each shot even-par 72 over the first 18-holes. Harvey's second-round 75 put him tied for 25th at 147. Brauckmeyer scored a 76 in the afternoon and fell into a tie for 34th at 148.
South Carolina-Aiken, ranked No. 9 in the recent Golfweek Division II poll, holds a one-shot lead over host Akron and Old Dominion with the Broncos nine swings back entering Tuesday's final round. Play begins at 5:30 a.m. PT with tee times from holes No. 1 and No. 10. Live scoring is available by clicking here.
