FAIRFAX, Calif. – Senior Matt McCarty carded a 9-under 133 and junior Berk Harvey had a 7-under 135 to put Santa Clara men's golf in ninth-place with a team total of 12-under 556 after 36 holes of the Alister MacKenzie Invitational.
McCarty, who shot a 61 at this event last year, opened with a 6-under 65 to lead the Broncos to an opening round even-par 284.
Harvey and junior Zack Kaneshiro each had a career-low score in the second round, propelling the Broncos to a 12-under 272, which was the third-lowest team round of the day.
McCarty shot a 3-under 68 in the second-round to enter the clubhouse tied for fourth on the individual leaderboard, six shots behind leader Sean Yu of San Jose State.
Harvey birdied eight of his first nine holes in the second round en route to a 6-under 65 bettering his previous low of 66, which was shot at this event last year. He crept into a tie for ninth with four other golfers.
With the help of an eagle on the 492-yard, par-5 first hole, Kaneshiro bounced back from an opening 73 to register a 4-under 67 over the second 18 holes. He jumped 22 spots on the leaderboard into a tie for 32nd at 2-under 140. Kaneshiro's previous low score was 68, last accomplished in April at the Cowboy Classic.

The Broncos are getting a good look at their West Coast Conference competition with four other league members among the 15-team field. Pepperdine, the preseason favorite to win the WCC title, carded a 539 total to take a five-shot lead over Saint Mary's heading into Tuesday's final round at the 6,734-yard, par-71 Meadow Club.
