STOCKTON, Calif. – Senior Matt McCarty shot a final-round 5-under 67 for a runner-up finish and Santa Clara men's golf moved up two spots on the leaderboard to claim fourth-place with a 10-under 854 total at the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational.
Buoyed by four counting scores at or below par the Broncos matched the lowest round of the day at 8-under 280 to climb past No. 35 Long Beach State and Fresno State into fourth, just one-shot behind Nevada for a podium finish. San Jose State won the team title with an 848 while No. 5 BYU's 851 took second.
"We had a good round today," head coach Rob Miller said. "We made up ground on all the leaders, but unfortunately we got nipped by Nevada. Our goal was to stay close to the leaders and we actually made up strokes. It would have been nice to beat the No. 5 team in the country."
McCarty did his best to make that happen with his 67, climbing three spots on the leaderboard to finish tied for second at 9-under 207, two-swings behind medalist Sean Yu of San Jose State. McCarty was awarded the runner-up trophy with a better final-round score than Nevada's Sam Harned (68).
Konrad Brauckmeyer shot a 2-under 70 on Tuesday to bolster the Broncos charge. He moved into a tie for 28th along with teammate Zack Kaneshiro, who was 1-under on Tuesday, with a tournament total of 1-over 217.
"It was nice to see Konrad finish strong. We needed that today," Miller said of his sophomore.
Junior Berk Harvey was consistent the entire tournament with rounds 71-71-72 to finish with a share of 15th at 2-under 214.
"Having four guys finish in the top third of the field is always a good thing," Miller quipped.
"We finished strong for a change and survived in pretty good shape," Miller concluded. "We'll move up in the rankings to right around where I feel we should be."
The Broncos conclude their fall season at the Saint Mary's Invitational, which is scheduled for Nov. 4-6 at Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach.
