Men’s Soccer Drops 2-0 Decision to Portland on the Road

PORTLAND, Ore. – Delentz Pierre's goal in the 30th minute stood up as the game-winner for Portland who beat Santa Clara men's soccer, 2-0, on Saturday at Merlo Field in a West Coast Conference match.  The loss snapped a four-match win streak on the road for the Broncos.

Pierre's goal came off a set piece when he headed in a Rey Ortiz corner kick to the near post to hand Santa Clara (7-5-1, 1-2 WCC) their first true road loss of the season.  The Broncos lost a neutral site match to Utah Valley in Las Vegas on Sept. 19 for their only loss away from home prior to Saturday's match.

Santa Clara had limited opportunities in the first half getting outshot 7-1 but got a lift in the second 45 from Alex Achramowicz, Sam Agosti and Terrell Smith, who came off the bench.  Achramowicz and Agosti each put their shots on frame early in the second half as the Broncos outshot the Pilots, 8-5, after intermission.

But with the Broncos pushing forward in numbers trying to chase the equalizer, the Pilots (7-5-1, 2-1 WCC) scored on a counter-attack in the 76th minute to seal the win. Kevin Ogudugu slotted the ball underneath the on-rushing Broncos goalkeeper Guillem Badenes Mecho on RJ Stretch's lead pass.

Portland goalkeeper Nico Campuzano made five saves compared to two for Badenes Mecho to record his third shutout of the season.

NOTES
