SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Alex Churness and Miguel Berry combined to score three goals in the second half to lift San Diego to a 3-1 win over Santa Clara men's soccer on Saturday night in the 2019 season finale at Stevens Stadium.
Eduardo Lopez Perez opened the scoring for Santa Clara (8-7-2, 2-4-1) in the 41st minute when he settled down a pass from Terrell Smith on the left side and scored from 12 yards out as his shot ricocheted off the underside of the crossbar into the net.
For Lopez Perez, it was his fourth goal of the season to tie for the team lead with Javier Ruiz Duran.
The Broncos had opportunities to add to their lead when they peppered the Toreros defense with three good looks in a span of 90 seconds just before the half but could not put one through and settled for a 1-0 lead into intermission.
In the second half, the Broncos opened up with two more shots before San Diego (12-5-1, 3-4) found the back of the net on a header by Alex Churness on a cross from Chase Van Wey in the 54th minutes to level the match at 1-all.
Churness struck again eight minutes later on a feed from Miguel Berry along the end line where he muscled the ball in from close range beating Bronco goalkeeper Henning Jolivet to give the Toreros a 2-1 lead.
Berry made it 3-1 late in the match putting the game away with his league-leading 17th goal of the season in the 87th minute.
Seven Bronco and four Torero seniors were recognized prior to the match. Matt Golbranson, Jolivet, Hendrik Kuehn and Nate Shue got the starting nod for the Broncos with Golbranson and Shue wearing the captain's armband. Sam Agosti, Dylan Carrubba and Miles Robinson were the other honorees for the Broncos but were unable to play due to various ailments.
• Santa Clara leads the series 33-15-5.
• It was the first time all season the Broncos had conceded three goals in a game.
