Concordia Holds Off Men’s Water Polo in Conference Opener

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Marius Jakimcikas tallied six goals for Concordia which held off a late charge from Santa Clara water polo to earn an 11-10 win on Saturday.

Mac Carey had four goals and Shane Hughes added three for the Broncos (8-6, 1-0) in their Western Water Polo Association opener.

Santa Clara tied the game at 7-all late in the third quarter on a goal from Carey after losing a one-goal lead shortly after halftime.

One of Messan Moore's two goals and a marker from Jakimcikas in the first 2 minutes of the fourth built a 9-7 lead for the Eagles (6-11, 1-1).

Goals from Carey and later from Hughes each time pulled the Broncos within a goal, but Jakimcikas scored the eventual game-winner with 40 seconds left in a game that saw neither team leading by more than two and featured five ties.

A goal by Hughes early in the third gave the Broncos a 5-4 lead, but Jakimcikas scored three times in a row during a span of 1 minute, 30 seconds.

Cullen Mooers had 10 saves in earning the win for the Eagles.

Santa Clara scored on both of its 5-meter penalty shots and went 2-for-7 with the extra attacker. Concordia was 2 of 6 on the power play.

Ryan Werner, Patrick Kirk, Dominick Kirk, Jack Rottman, Shane Hughes, Mac Carey and Sean Tehaney started for the Broncos. Tehaney posted five blocks during the opening half. Chase Zamborelli played the final two quarters in net and turned away seven Concordia shots, but suffered the loss.
• With two assists, Carey continued his streak of posting at least one in each game this season.

The Broncos continue WWPA action next week, going on the road to face Loyola Marymount on Thursday and UC San Diego on Friday.
