FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Sophomore Claire Choi continued her hot start to the new season by firing a 3-over 147 leading Santa Clara women's golf to a share of 10th-place with a team total of 614 (312-302) after two rounds of the Ptarmigan Ram Classic.
The Broncos improved 10 swings in the afternoon round but were unable to gain any ground on the tightly-congested field. Seven shots separate fifth-place San Francisco (607) from Santa Clara and Northern Colorado, who together hold down the 10th spot.
"We struggled in our opening round today, but bounced back in the second round," head coach Krystal Kelly said. "It's only our second tournament of the season so we are still finding our groove."
New Mexico State has a 10-shot bulge over host Colorado State at the top of the team leaderboard.
Choi, who earned a career-best T4 finish two weeks ago at Hobble Creek, played the opening 18 holes at 3-over. She birdied four holes over the second-round to finish at even-par 72. Choi is tied with seven other golfers at 3-over 147, four swings back of clubhouse leader Dominique Galloway of New Mexico State.
Four of the five team members had a better second-round score leading to the improved team total. Junior Sarah Busey shot a 74 in the afternoon after opening with a 77. She's tied for 23rd at 7-over 151.
Senior Marni Murez had a four-swing improvement to grab a share of 58th at 160 (82-78).
"The elevation definitely adds an element of challenge; the ball flies much farther here," Kelly noted. "We are looking to post a solid round tomorrow to move up the leaderboard."
A shotgun start format at 8 a.m. PT will get Tuesday's final round underway. Live scoring is available by clicking here.
