The Santa Clara men's water polo team closed out their regular season today, losing 13-6 to No. 4 Stanford. The Broncos finish their year at 16-12 and are going into next week's WWPA championships.
"We played well in the first quarter and were tied with them for a good while there," said head coach Keith Wilbur. "We played good defense early."
Mike Detoy led all Bronco scorers with two goals to go with a kickout as well. "Mike did a great job of getting in there and mixing it up with them," said Wilbur.
Josh Early extended his scoring streak to ten games with a goal, Liam Farrell scored once to go along with two steals and a kickout, and Mark Soares and Charlie Moore each scored once as well.
Robert Callahan played three quarters in the goal, blocking six shots. Chris Jones took over in the fourth, blocking two.
"There were a couple of points where they jumped on us," said Wilbur. "We had to do a better job of not allowing them anything easy."
The seeding for the WWPA championships will take place tomorrow a 9 a.m. The Broncos have held fast for the majority of the season in the conference.
