Colorado Springs, Colorado - The Santa Clara men's water polo team ended their bid for the WWPA Championship today as they fell to the No. 3 seed, Loyola Marymount, 12-8 in the semifinals.
"It was a rough game, but the team played well," said head coach Keith Wilbur. "We had some bad bounces, but I thought our guys stayed tough. And LMU is a very good team, so we have to give them credit."
The team fell behind 5-2 at the end of the first period, but battled back, tying the score at 7-7 midway through the third period. However, LMU went on a four goal run and never looked back. Santa Clara never led in the game.
In typical fashion of the season and the first game of the tournament, the Broncos spread out the scoring. Eight different players scored all eight of the team's goals. Liam Farrell had an assist, a steal, and a kickout drawn along with his goal. Josh Early, Mike Detoy, Andrew Fitch, Charlie Moore, Nicholas Poggetti, Stephen Hobbs, and Tommy Hendrickson all scored one goal apiece as well.
Luke Oda chipped in with two kickouts drawn and Mike Sorgenfrei had three kickouts drawn to go along with an assist.
Robert Callahan played the entire game in goal, recording eight blocks and two steals.
The Broncos will finish off their season tomorrow as they take on host Air Force in the third place game at 1:30 p.m. (MT).
